Plastics-coated fabrics for upholstery — Part 2: Specification for PVC-coated woven fabrics
ISO 7617-2:2003 specifies requirements for coated fabrics for upholstered furniture, manufactured by applying to one side of a woven cloth a substantially continuous coating of a suitably plasticized polymer of vinyl chloride, or a copolymer the major constituent of which is vinyl chloride. Such coatings are known as poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) coatings. The present specification covers two grades (A and B) of PVC-coated woven fabric.

Overview
ISO 7617-2:2026 establishes the specification for poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC)-coated woven fabrics used in upholstery applications. Developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), this standard provides comprehensive requirements for coated fabrics manufactured by applying a continuous PVC coating to one side of a woven textile. The standard covers two grades (A and B) of PVC-coated woven fabrics and addresses critical properties such as physical characteristics, colour fastness, visual quality, thickness, and fire behaviour. This document guides manufacturers, suppliers, and users in ensuring quality, durability, and suitability of PVC-coated upholstery fabrics in the furniture industry.
Key Topics
Scope and Grades
ISO 7617-2 applies to PVC-coated woven fabrics intended for upholstery, specifying two product grades (A and B) with different performance levels.Physical Requirements
The standard outlines criteria for mass per unit area, tear load, coating adhesion, tensile strength, flex resistance, thickness, and abrasion resistance. These performance parameters help ensure fabrics deliver the necessary durability for furniture use.Colour Fastness and Appearance
Requirements for colour fastness to light, rubbing (dry, wet, with soapy water), and resistance to print wear are specified. Visual examination criteria ensure the coating is uniform, flaw-free, and meets aesthetic expectations.Fire Behaviour
While ISO 7617-2 does not set generic fire safety performance, it strongly recommends manufacturers provide users with fire behaviour information relevant to applicable safety regulations.Sampling and Testing
The standard details sampling methods, selection of test specimens, and procedures for testing and determining product conformity, including retesting protocols.Marking and Traceability
Each fabric roll must be labeled with essential identification information such as manufacturer, batch number, colour, dimensions, and standard reference.Reporting
Requirements for the contents of the test report ensure transparency and traceability in quality assessment and certification.
Applications
PVC-coated woven fabrics meeting ISO 7617-2 are widely used in:
Upholstered Furniture
Residential sofas, chairs, commercial seating, and transport seating benefit from the durability, cleanability, and aesthetics of PVC-coated fabrics.Contract and Public Spaces
Hotels, healthcare facilities, and public areas require upholstery that withstands heavy use, cleaning, and exposure to light, making compliance with this standard essential for safety and longevity.Transport Interiors
PVC-coated woven fabrics are also utilized in bus, train, and maritime seating, where resistance to abrasion, soiling, and wear is critical.
By complying with ISO 7617-2, suppliers and manufacturers can demonstrate that their PVC-coated upholstery fabrics meet international benchmarks for quality and performance, supporting market access and customer satisfaction.
Related Standards
The performance evaluation methods referenced in ISO 7617-2 are harmonized with several related standards for consistency and reliability:
- ISO 105 Series - Colour fastness testing methods
- ISO 176, ISO 1421, ISO 2231 - Physical testing for plastics- and rubber-coated textiles
- ISO 2286 Series - Roll characteristics (length, width, mass, thickness)
- ISO 2411, ISO 4674-1 - Coating adhesion and tear resistance
- ISO 5470-2, ISO 5981, ISO 32100 - Abrasion, blocking, and flex resistance
Other related standards include regional fire safety and furniture quality standards, which may further specify requirements for finished upholstered products. For a complete overview of international standards for plastic-coated fabrics and their testing, refer to the ISO 7617 series and the ISO catalogue.
