BRIEF HISTORY
The IS0 Recommendation R 1957, Machinemade textile floor coverings - Sampling and cutting specimens
for physical tests, was drawn up by Technical Committee ISO/TC 38, Textiles, the Secretariat of which is held by
the British Standards Institution (BSI).
Work on this question led to the adoption of Draft IS0 Recommendation No. 1957, which was circulated
to all the IS0 Member Bodies for enquiry in April 1970. It was approved, subject to a few modifications of an

editorial nature, by the following Member Bodies :

SAMPLING AND CUTTING SPECIMENS
FOR PHYSICAL TESTS
1. SCOPE
This IS0 Recommendation describes a procedure to be followed when samples are taken either from a bulk
supply of textile floor covering or from specially produced material, and when specimens are cut from these
samples if such specimens are to be used for physical tests.
It is accepted that the sample taken may not necessarily be completely representative of the bulk. It is recommended
that the method of sampling be previously agreed by the parties interested in the results of the test.
The procedure is applicable to machine-made textile floor coverings with or without pile.
2. PRINCIPLE
Procedures are given for the selection of a sample and for the selection of test specimens from that sample in
such a way that they are as representative of the bulk as possible.
3. PROCEDURE
3.1 Take any sample across the whole production width of the product, excluding any portion normally
trimmed off during the production process.

HISTORIQUE
La Recommandation ISO/R 1957, Revêtements de sol textiles - Echantillonnage et prélèvement des
éprouvettes en vue des essais physiques, a été élaborée par le Comité Technique ISO/TC 38, Textiles, dont le
Secrétariat est assuré par le British Standards Institution (BSI).
Les travaux relatifs à cette question aboutirent à l’adoption du Projet de Recommandation IS0 No 1957
qui fut soumis, en avril 1970, à l’enquête de tous les Comités Membres de I’ISO. I1 fut approuvé, sous réserve

de quelques modifications d’ordre rédactionnel, par les Comités Membres suivants :

EN VUE DES ESSAIS PHYSIQUES
1. OBJET
La présente Recommandation IS0 décrit une méthode à suivre pour le prélèvement d’échantillons sur un lot
de revêtements de sol textiles ou sur des revêtements de sol textiles spécialement fabriqués ainsi que pour le
prélèvement des éprouvettes sur ces échantillons lorsque de telles éprouvettes sont nécessaires pour les essais
physiques.
I1 est admis, que l’échantillon obtenu peut ne pas être complètement représentatif du lot. I1 est recommandé
que la méthode d’échantillonnage fasse l’objet d’un accord préalable entre les parties intéressées aux résultats
de l’essai.
Ces dispositions sont applicables à tous les revêtements de sol textiles fabriqués par des moyens mécaniques,
qu’ils soient à velours ou non.
2. PRINCIPE
Des directives sont données pour la sélection d’un échantillon et pour la sélection d’éprouvettes d’essais sur cet
échantillon de manière qu’elles soient aussi représentatives que possible du lot.
3. MODE OPÉRATOIRE
3.1 Prélever tout échantillon sur la totalité de la largeur de production de l’article, en excluant toute partie
normalement éliminée au cours du processus de production.
3.2 Examiner l’échantillon, relever et noter toute variation de caractère physique d’une partie à l’autre de
l’échantillon. De telles variations peuvent être constituées, par exemple, par l’existence de rangées de
touffes longues et de touffes courtes ou par des différences dans la disposition du velours ou de la surface
d’utilisation dans diverses parties de l’échantillon.
