BRIEF HISTORY
The IS0 Recommendation R 840, Code for numerical control of machines (Compatible with
tlic IS0 7 bit character set), was drawn up by Technical Committee ISO/TC 97, Computers and
inforination processing, the Secretariat of which is held by the United States of America Standards
Institute (USASI).
Work on this question by the Technical Committee began in 1963 and led, in 1967, to the
adoption of a Draft IS0 Recommendation.
In August 1967. this Draft IS0 Recommendation (No. 1314) was circulated to all the IS0
Member Bodies for enquiry. It was approved, subject to a few modifications of an editorial nature,
by the following Member Bodies :

Denmark New Zealand U.A.R.
France Poland United Kingdom
Germany Portugal U.S.A.
Iran Spain
Italy Sweden
No Member Body opposed the approval of the Draft.
The Draft IS0 Recommendation was then submitted by correspondence to the IS0 Council,
which decided, in October 1968, to accept it as an IS0 RECOMMENDATION.

1. SCOPE
This IS0 Recommendation describes a 7 bit coded character set for the numerical control of machines
and associated equipment (printers, punchers); it is to be implemented on 8-track punched tape.
This IS0 Recommendation consists of a table, notes and a key. An Annex gives the meanings assigned
to the symbols in the IS0 Recommendations on punched tape block formats.
2. REFERENCES
2.1 The recommended character set is based upon and compatible with the IS0 7 bit coded
character set, described in IS0 Recommendation R 646, 6 and 7 bit coded character sets for
information processing interchange.
2.2 The implementation of this coded character set on punched tapes is in accordance with IS0
Recommendation R .,* Representation of 6 and 7 bit coded character sets on punched tape;
it includes a parity check (even parity); the parity bit is on track 8.

HISTORIQUE
La Recommandation ]SOIR 840, Code pour la commande numérique des machines (Compatible
avec le jeu de caractères IS0 à 7 éléments), a été élaborée par le Comité Technique ISO/TC 97,
Calculateurs et traitement de l’information, dont le Secrétariat est assuré par le United States of
America Standards Institute (USASI).
Les travaux relatifs à cette question furent entrepris par le Comité Technique en 1963 et

aboutirent, en 1967, à l’adoption d‘un Projet de Recommandation ISO.
En août 1967, ce Projet de Recommandation IS0 (NO 1314) fut soumis à l’enquête de tous
les Comités Membres de IWO. I1 fut approuvé, sous réserve de quelques modifications d’ordre
rédactionnel, par les Comités Membres suivants :

1. OBJET
La présente Recommandation IS0 décrit un jeu de caractères codés à 7 éléments destiné à la
commande numérique de machines et équipement associés (imprimantes, perforatrices); il est maté-
rialisé sur bande perforée à 8 pistes. La présente Recommandation IS0 comporte un tableau, des
notes et une légende. Une Annexe donne la signification attribuée aux symboles dans les Recomman-
dations IS0 relatives aux formats de blocs pour bandes perforées.
2. RÉFÉRENCES
2.1 Le jeu de caractères recommandé est extrait du jeu IS0 de caractères codés à 7 éléments qui
fait l’objet de la Recommandation ISO/R 646, Jeux de caractères codés à 6 et 7 éléments pour
l’échange d’information entre matériels de traitement de l’in formation.
2.2 La matérialisation du jeu de caractères sur bande perforée est conforme à la Recommandation
ISO/R .*, Matérialisation des jeux de caractères codés à 6 et 7 éléments sur bande perforée; le
code comporte un contrôle de parité (nombre pair de perforations); l’élément de parité est
placé sur la geme piste.
2.3 Les termes techniques utilisés dans la présente Recommandation IS0 sont en accord avec la
Recommandation ISO/R .**, Vocabulaire du traitement de l’information.
