BRIEF HISTORY
The IS0 Recommendation R 638, Pulps- Determination of dry matter content, was drawn
up by Technical Committee ISO/TC 6, Paper, board and puips, the Secretariat of which is held
by the Association Française de Normalisation (AFNOR).
Work on this question by the Technical Committee began in 1961 and led, in 1965, to the
adoption of a Draft IS0 Recommendation.

In November 1965, this Draft IS0 Recommendation (No. 870) was circulated to all the
IS0 Member Bodies for enquiry. It was approved, subject to a few modifications of an editorial
nature, by the following Member Bodies :

1. PURPOSE
This IS0 Recommendation describes a method for the determination of the dry matter content in
Pulp-
2. SCOPE
This method applies to moist or air-dry pulp which does not contain any appreciable quantity
of matter, other than water, volatile at the specified temperature. It is used, for example, with
pulp samples taken for chemical and physical tests in the laboratory which require concurrent
determination of dry matter content. This method does not apply to the determination of the
dry matter content of slush pulp nor to the determination of the saleable mass of lots of pulp.
3. DEFINITION
The dry matter content of a pulp sample is the mass of a test piece when dried to constant mass at

HISTORIQUE
La Recommandation ISO/R 638, Pâtes - Détermination de lu teneur en matières sèches,
a été élaborée par le Comité Technique ISO/TC 6, Papiers, cartons et pâtes, dont le Secrétariat
est assuré par l’Association Française de Normalisation (AFNOR).
Les travaux relatifs à cette question furent entrepris par le Comité Technique en 1961 et
aboutirent en 1965 à l’adoption d’un Projet de Recommandation ISO.

En novembre 1965, ce Projet de Recommandation IS0 (No 870) fut soumis l’enquête de
tous les Comités Membres de 1’ISO. I1 fut approuvé, sous réserve de quelques modifications
d’ordre rédactionnel, par les Comités Membres suivants :

DETERMINATION DE LA TENEUR EN MATIÈRES SECHES
1. OBJET
La présente Recommandation IS0 décrit une méthode pour la détermination de la teneur en
matières sèches des pâtes.
2. DOMAINE D’APPLICATION
Cette méthode s’applique à la pâte, humide ou sèche à l’air, mais ne contenant pas des quantités
appréciables de matières volatiles à la température spécifiée, autres que l’eau. Elle est utilisée pour
la détermination de la teneur en matières sèches d’échantillons de pâte prélevés, par exemple, en
vue des analyses chimiques et physiques effectuées en laboratoire dans le même temps. Elle ne
convient pas pour la détermination de la teneur en matières sèches d’une suspension de pâte, ni
pour la détermination de la masse marchande de lots de pâte.
3. DRFINITION
La teneur en matières sèches d’un échantillon de pâte est la masse d’une éprouvette après séchage
jusqu’à masse constante à une température de 103 f 2 OC dans les conditions spécifiées, expri-
mée en pourcentage de la masse humide de l’éprouvette.
