Overview
EN 14451:2020 specifies requirements for in-line anti-vacuum valves (Family D, Type A) used to prevent pollution of potable water by backflow caused by backsiphoning. The standard applies to valves with nominal sizes DN 10 to DN 50 and pressure rating PN 10, designed to operate without adjustment at pressures up to 1 MPa (10 bar) and temperatures up to 65 °C (with a short-term limit of 90 °C for up to 1 hour). EN 14451:2020 covers design, materials, hydraulic and mechanical performance, acoustic behaviour, marking and delivery documentation, and the specified test methods to verify conformity.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Field of application: Protects potable water against backsiphoning only (no protection against backpressure).
- Size and pressure: Applicable to DN 10–DN 50; PN 10, serviceable up to 1 MPa.
- Temperature: Permanent duty up to 65 °C; maximum 1 hour at 90 °C.
- Design & materials: Specifies general design principles, connections (threads per EN 10226-1 / EN ISO 228-1), air inlet function and dezincification resistance marking (products complying with EN ISO 6509-1 may be marked “DR”).
- Performance tests: Defines a test sequence including visual verification, tightness testing, flow rate/pressure loss, bending moment/mechanical strength, endurance cycles, vacuum testing, and acoustic testing (see staged tests in the standard).
- Acoustics: Acoustic measurement and classification for DN ≤ 32 (groups I, II or nc) following EN ISO 3822 series.
- Marking & designation: Permanent marking on casing or plate; designation includes reference to EN 14451, family/type, DN, end connection, acoustic group (if applicable) and body material.
- Documentation: Technical documents and presentation at delivery requirements are specified.
Applications and Users
EN 14451:2020 is intended for:
- Manufacturers and designers of in-line anti-vacuum valves for drinking water systems.
- Test laboratories conducting type and production tests to verify hydraulic, mechanical and acoustic performance.
- Specifiers and procurement teams (water utilities, building services engineers) requiring compliant anti-vacuum valves for service connections, meter installations and inline protection against backsiphoning.
- Installers and maintenance personnel who need to select and identify correct valves by DN, thread type and acoustic classification. Note: The standard does NOT cover devices for protection against backpressure; selection must reflect site-specific backflow risk.

3.1
in-line anti-vacuum valve
mechanical device with an air inlet which is closed when water flows through it at or above
atmospheric pressure, but which opens to admit air if there is a subatmospheric pressure at the water
inlet or when the flow stops, and closes so as to be watertight when the flow of water is resumed at
normal pressure
Note 1 to entry: In case of subatmospheric pressure the obturator should admit air to the downstream
pipework as well as throttling the inlet waterway of the device.
Note 2 to entry: It ensures no protection
