Overview
EN 50065-2-1:2003/A1:2005 is a CENELEC amendment that specifies immunity requirements and test methods for mains communications equipment and systems operating in the 95 kHz to 148.5 kHz frequency range. The standard applies to devices that transmit or receive information over low-voltage electrical installations in residential, commercial and light-industrial environments. Its objective is to limit mutual influence between mains communication equipment and contribute to overall Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC).
Key points from the amendment include updated immunity limits, clarified test ports and procedures, and normative reference replacements (for example EN 50082-1 replaced by EN 61000-6-1).
Key Topics
Scope and applicability
- Covers only the part of equipment used for transmission/reception on low-voltage supplies; other functions must meet their relevant immunity standards.
- Excludes immunity between systems operating in the same band and signals from high- or medium-voltage Power Line Carrier systems.
Immunity objectives
- Define essential immunity requirements and test methods for continuous and transient disturbances, both conducted and radiated, and for electrostatic discharge.
- Specify test requirements per interface/port (signal, AC/DC power, earth/functional ground).
Notable technical updates (Amendment A1)
- Surge and transient levels adjusted for power ports (e.g., surges changed to ±2 kV common mode / ±1 kV differential mode for AC ports in Table 4; DC ports ±0.5 kV for both modes in Table 3).
- Voltage interruption requirement for AC ports changed from 1000 ms to 5 s.
- Earth port (functional ground) immunity table added with example levels (RF common mode 0.15–80 MHz at 3 V AM 80 %, fast transients ±0.5 kV peak, 5/50 ns, 5 kHz repetition using capacitive clamp).
- Clarifications to narrow-band conducted interference test connections and Annex A test circuit references.
Applications
This standard is directly applicable to:
- Power line communication (PLC) modems and controllers operating in 95–148.5 kHz.
- Home and building automation devices that use mains signalling in the specified band.
- Commercial and light-industrial mains communication systems requiring type-testing for EMC compliance.
Practical benefits include reduced mutual interference, predictable performance in typical environments, and a harmonised test regime for manufacturers and test laboratories.
Related Standards
- EN 50065-1 (defines frequency bands and general signalling principles)
- EN 61000-6-1 (replaces EN 50082-1 as referenced normative immunity standard)
- CISPR 16 series (measurement techniques and instrumentation references)
Note: Safety considerations are outside the scope of this EMC immunity standard. For implementations in extreme or atypical environments, additional mitigation or higher-severity testing may be required.
