Testing of welded joints of thermoplastics semi-finished products - Part 7: Tensile test with waisted test specimens
This document specifies the dimensions, the method of sampling, the preparation of the test specimens and the conditions for performing the tensile test with waisted test specimens in order to determine the tensile energy welding factor.
A tensile test with waisted specimens can be used in conjunction with other tests (e.g. bend, tensile, tensile creep, macro, etc.) to assess the performance of welded assemblies, made from thermoplastics materials.
The test is applicable to co-axial or co-planar heated tool butt welded assemblies made from thermoplastics materials filled or unfilled, but not reinforced. It is not applicable to tubular assemblies with a nominal outside diameter less than 90 mm.

Overview
SIST EN 12814-7:2024 is a European standard developed by CEN that specifies the procedures for testing welded joints in thermoplastic semi-finished products using a tensile test with waisted test specimens. This updated standard supersedes EN 12814-7:2002 and introduces revisions such as added symbols and new specimen dimension tables. The testing methodology focuses on determining the tensile energy welding factor, a critical parameter to assess the integrity and performance of welded thermoplastic assemblies.
Applicable primarily to co-axial or co-planar heated tool butt welded assemblies made from both filled and unfilled thermoplastic materials (excluding reinforced plastics), this standard excludes tubular assemblies with nominal outside diameters less than 90 mm. It provides detailed requirements on specimen preparation, testing conditions, and evaluation metrics to ensure consistent and reliable tensile testing outcomes.
Key Topics
Specimen Dimensions and Preparation: Defines precise dimensions for waisted test specimens dependent on sample thickness (up to 30 mm), including provisions for cutting thicker specimens into multiple layers. Surfaces must be free from notches, and welding beads are to be removed only to the extent necessary.
Sampling and Marking: Specimens should be cut perpendicular to the weld at least eight hours after welding to ensure settled joint conditions. Each specimen must be clearly identified to preserve traceability.
Testing Conditions: Specimens must be conditioned at 23 ± 2 °C for 12-24 hours based on thickness, and tested at controlled speeds per EN ISO 527-1 standards. The test involves loading specimens along their longitudinal axis until fracture, measuring load and extension to calculate the energy to break.
Determination of Tensile Energy Welding Factor: This factor is computed using the ratio of mean energies to break between welded and unwelded specimens. This quantitative measure helps evaluate weld performance in tensile modes.
Documentation: Comprehensive test reports are mandated, encompassing all relevant details such as test piece description, welding type, test parameters, failure mode, and measured tensile energies, ensuring transparency and reproducibility.
Applications
SIST EN 12814-7:2024 serves as a fundamental standard for industries that fabricate and utilize thermoplastic assemblies, providing a harmonized approach to verify weld strength and quality. Typical applications include:
Quality Control in Manufacturing: Ensuring consistency and reliability of welded joints in plastic components used in automotive, construction, and consumer goods.
Research and Development: Assessing new welding techniques or thermoplastic materials by characterizing weld performance under tensile loading conditions.
Compliance and Certification: Providing standardized test methods for regulatory submissions, product certification, and supplier qualification in the plastics sector.
Material Selection and Design: Aiding engineers in selecting appropriate thermoplastic materials and designing welded assemblies that meet stringent mechanical performance criteria.
Related Standards
EN 13100-1: Visual Examination of Welded Joints of Thermoplastics - complements the tensile test by providing guidelines on visual inspection techniques.
EN ISO 527-1: Plastics - Determination of Tensile Properties - outlines general principles and testing speeds for tensile testing of plastics, which are referenced for specimen testing conditions.
ISO 5893: Specifications for tensile, flexural, and compression test equipment, ensuring uniformity in mechanical testing apparatus used.
By adhering to SIST EN 12814-7:2024, organizations ensure reliable, standardized evaluation of welded thermoplastic joints, enhancing product durability and safety in practical engineering contexts.
