Overview
EN 13100-1:2017 - Non destructive testing of welded joints of thermoplastics semi-finished products - Part 1: Visual examination is a CEN European standard that defines requirements and procedures for the visual examination (VT) of welds in thermoplastic materials. It covers visual inspection before, during and after welding, specifies basic test conditions and equipment, and lists the minimum information to be recorded in a test report. EN 13100-1:2017 is the first part of the EN 13100 series (parts 2–4 cover radiography, ultrasonic and high-voltage testing).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope of inspection: Visual examination of welds in the as-welded condition and optionally prior to and during welding to check joint preparation and run-by-run quality.
- Test conditions and equipment:
- Minimum illuminance at the surface: 350 lx (500 lx recommended).
- Access for direct visual examination: eye placed within 600 mm of the weld, with viewing angle not less than 30°.
- Remote visual aids (mirrors, boroscopes, cameras) allowed by agreement or application standard.
- Additional light sources may be used to improve contrast; dimensional gauges and callipers must meet required precision.
- Personnel: Inspectors should be qualified and familiar with relevant standards and welding procedures. Qualification in accordance with EN ISO 9712 (or an equivalent) is recommended.
- Examination stages:
- Joint preparation: verify shape, dimensions, cleaning, alignment and gaps per welding procedure specification.
- During welding: for multipass processes, ensure each run is cleaned, free of visible defects, and transitions support subsequent passes.
- Finished welds and repairs: assess conformity to agreed acceptance criteria and re-examine repaired welds.
- Acceptance and classification: Extent of examination and defect acceptance levels are defined by EN 16296, EN 14728 (classification), or by agreement between parties.
- Test report: Must include manufacturer/examiner names, reference to EN 13100-1:2017, weld location, acceptance criteria, materials, joint and welding process, extent of examination, inspection devices, defect details, examiner signature and date. Photographs or sketches recommended for permanent records.
Applications
- Quality control and final acceptance of welded thermoplastic products such as pipe systems, fabricated tanks, and semi-finished polymer components.
- Process monitoring during production welding to detect visible defects early and guide corrective action.
- Contractual inspection requirements between manufacturers, fabricators and clients.
Who should use this standard
- Welding inspectors, NDT personnel, QA/QC engineers, fabricators of thermoplastic welded assemblies, and procurement/specification authors who need consistent visual testing procedures and reporting for plastic welds.
