Overview
EN 62734:2015/A1:2019 (identical to IEC 62734:2014/A1:2019) is a CENELEC amendment to the ISA‑100.11a wireless communication network and communication profiles for industrial networks. Published September 2019 and adopted nationally by CENELEC members, this amendment updates the original EN 62734:2015 to reflect technical clarifications, IEEE reference updates and specific protocol, security and object attribute revisions. Keywords: EN 62734:2015/A1:2019, ISA100.11a, industrial wireless, IEEE 802.15.4-2015, industrial automation.
Key Topics
- Scope and status
- Amendment A1 modifies EN 62734:2015 and is endorsed by CENELEC without changes. It aligns the European standard with IEC 62734 amendment content.
- IEEE 802.15.4 reference updates
- Replaces references to IEEE 802.15.4:2011 with IEEE Std 802.15.4‑2015 to ensure compatibility with the latest low‑rate wireless network base standard.
- Security and join procedures
- Revises security join messages and data structures (e.g., Security_Sym_Join_Request / Security_Sym_Join_Response).
- Updates MIC (message integrity code) generation for System_Manager_Join responses to an HMAC‑based computation using the join key, device EUI‑64 and challenge values.
- Adds and adjusts join-related input/output arguments and constraints (e.g., Consortium_Info, Assigned_Max_TSDU_Size, MIC).
- Object attributes and defaults
- Modifies attribute ranges and default values in management objects (ARMO, DMO, DLMO) - e.g., default timeout and timing values adjusted (30 s → 248 s / 62 s in specific attributes) and valid ranges clarified.
- Protocol behavior and link handling
- Clarifies processing steps for DPDUs/TPDUs, advertisement/join link defaults, backoff rules (DauxJoinBackoff) and treatment of skipped links in diagnostics.
- Key management and methods
- Clarifies use limits for key policy updates, updates to key‑related method arguments, and other key lifecycle handling details.
Applications
- Designed for industrial automation, process control and wireless sensor/actuator networks where ISA100.11a is used.
- Useful to device manufacturers, system integrators, network architects, test laboratories, and certification bodies implementing or validating ISA100.11a stacks and gateways.
- Helps ensure interoperable, secure wireless deployment in factories, process plants and field instrumentation.
Related Standards
- IEEE Std 802.15.4‑2015 (Low‑Rate Wireless Personal Area Networks) - normative reference for PHY/MAC behavior.
- IEC 62734 / EN 62734 (base ISA100.11a standard) - this document is Amendment A1 to that standard.
This amendment focuses on interoperability, updated IEEE references, tightened security join behavior and corrected object defaults - essential for robust ISA100.11a-based industrial wireless deployments.
