Solid biofuels - Determination of bulk density (ISO 17828:2015)
This document describes a method of determining bulk density of solid biofuels by the use of a standard measuring container. This method is applicable to all solid biofuels with a nominal top size of maximum 100 mm.
Bulk density is not an absolute value, therefore conditions for its determination have to be standandised in order to gain comparative measuring results.
Note 1: The nominal top size is defined as the aperture size of the sieve where at least 95 % by mass of the material passes (ISO DIS 16559 (14588)).
Note 2: Bulk density of solid biofuels is subject to variation due to several factors such as vibration, shock, pressure, biodegradation, drying and wetting. Measured bulk density can therefore deviate from actual conditions during transportation, storage and transhipment.

Diese Internationale Norm definiert ein Verfahren zur Bestimmung der Schüttdichte von biogenen Festbrennstoffen unter Verwendung eines Standard-Messbehälters. Dieses Verfahren gilt für sämtliche schüttbaren biogenen Festbrennstoffe mit einer nominellen Siebgröße von höchstens 100 mm.
Die Schüttdichte ist kein absoluter Wert; daher müssen die Bedingungen für deren Bestimmung genormt sein, um vergleichbare Messergebnisse zu erreichen.
ANMERKUNG Die Schüttdichte von biogenen Festbrennstoffen unterliegt einer Schwankung aufgrund mehrerer Faktoren, wie z. B. Erschütterung, Stoß, Druck, biologischer Abbau, Trocknen und Nässe/Benetzung. Die gemessene Schüttdichte kann daher von den tatsächlich vorherrschenden Bedingungen während des Transports, der Lagerung oder Umladung abweichen.

ISO 17828:2015 définit une méthode de détermination de la masse volumique apparente des biocombustibles solides à l'aide d'un récipient-mesure standard. Cette méthode s'applique à tout biocombustible solide versable d'une dimension supérieure nominale maximale de 100 mm.
La masse volumique apparente n'étant pas une valeur absolue, il est indispensable de normaliser les conditions de sa détermination afin d'obtenir des résultats de mesure comparatifs.
NOTE La masse volumique apparente des biocombustibles solides est soumise à des variations aux causes diverses telles que vibrations, chocs, pression, biodégradation, séchage et mouillage. La masse volumique apparente mesurée peut par conséquent s'écarter de celle observée en conditions réelles lors du transport, stockage ou transbordement.

Ta dokument opisuje metodo za določanje prostorninske mase trdnih biogoriv z uporabo standardnega merilnega vsebnika. Metoda se uporablja za vsa trdna biogoriva z največjo nazivno zrnatostjo 100 mm. Prostorninska masa ni absolutna vrednost, zato je za pridobivanje primerljivih merilnih rezultatov treba standardizirati pogoje njenega določanja. Opomba 1: Nazivna zrnatost je opredeljena kot velikost odprtine sita, skozi katero preide vsaj 95 % mase materiala (ISO DIS 16559 (14588)). Opomba 2: Prostorninska masa trdnih biogoriv se lahko spreminja zaradi različnih dejavnikov, kot so vibracije, udarci, pritisk, biorazgradljivost, sušenje in močenje. Izmerjena prostorninska biomasa se zato med prevozom, shranjevanjem in pretovarjanjem lahko razlikuje od dejanske.

This document (EN ISO 17828:2015) has been prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 238 "Solid
biofuels" in collaboration with Technical Committee CEN/TC 335 “Solid biofuels” the secretariat of
which is held by SIS.
This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an
identical text or by endorsement, at the latest by June 2016, and conflicting national standards shall be
withdrawn at the latest by June 2016.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of

Introduction
Bulk density is an important parameter for fuel deliveries on volume basis, and together with the net
calorific value, it determines the energy density. It also facilitates the estimation of space requirements
for transport and storage. This International Standard describes the determination of the bulk density
of pourable solid biofuels, which can be conveyed in a continuous material flow.
For practical reasons, two standard measuring containers with a volume of 5 l or 50 l were chosen for the
determination. Due to the limited volume of these containers, some fuels are therefore excluded from
the scope of this International Standard. This, for example, applies for chunk wood, non-comminuted
