Overview

CEN/TS 17693-2:2021 - "Earthworks - Soil treatment tests - Part 2" is a CEN technical specification that defines a laboratory reference method to determine the Index of Dust Emission (IDE) for dry mineral products used in soil treatment for earthworks. The procedure evaluates the aptitude of dry materials (limes, cements, hydraulic road binders, fly ashes, ground‑granulated blast furnace slag, etc.) to emit dust during handling stages such as stocking, spreading and mixing.

Important note: the IDE is a laboratory index and is not directly comparable to on‑site dust emission rates; it is intended for comparative, quality and safety purposes.

Key topics & technical requirements

  • Scope of materials: products conforming to EN 459‑1, EN 197‑1, EN 13282‑1/2, EN 14227‑4, EN 450‑1 and EN 15167‑1 (limes, cements, road binders, fly ashes, GGBFS).
  • Test principle: an air jet sieving + suction method measures the fraction of a powdered sample carried through a 45 µm sieve by an ascending air flow; trapped fines quantify dust emission.
  • Core equipment: air jet siever with rotating air-distribution tube, 200 mm/45 µm sieve, polycarbonate column (bell), vacuum system (min. 60 m³/h), dust/water traps, manometric indicator, air inlet valve, timer and balance.
  • Procedure highlights:
    • Sample mass: 50 ± 1 g distributed on the sieve.
    • Suction duration: 4 minutes at the regulated depression (manometric level ≈ 64 mm ± 2 mm colored liquid ≈ 5.52 hPa).
    • Cleaning and maintenance: ultrasonic cleaning of the sieve, regular emptying/acid cleaning of dust trap, anti‑static treatment of the column.
  • Result expression: IDE (%) = ((m1 − m2) / m1) × 100, where m1 = initial sample mass, m2 = mass remaining on the sieve after the test. The reported IDE is the average of three tests (rounded to nearest integer).
  • Reporting: test conformity statement, sample ID, test date, operator, measured values, observations.

Applications & users

  • Quality control laboratories assessing dustiness of binders and supplementary cementitious materials.
  • Material manufacturers (lime, cement, fly ash, GGBFS) for product development and specification.
  • Civil and geotechnical contractors and roadworks teams for selection of low‑dust products in earthworks.
  • Environmental/occupational health teams and specifiers writing procurement or compliance requirements for construction projects.
  • Regulators and standardization bodies comparing materials and defining mitigation needs.

Related standards

  • EN 459‑1, EN 197‑1, EN 13282‑1 & ‑2, EN 14227‑4, EN 450‑1, EN 15167‑1 - referenced product specifications and conformity criteria for materials covered by this test.

Keywords: CEN/TS 17693-2:2021, Index of dust emission, IDE, dust emission test, air jet siever, earthworks, soil treatment, cement dust, fly ash dust, road binders.
