Magnezij in magnezijeve zlitine - Sistem označevanja anod, ingotov in ulitkov - Številka in simbol materiala

a) standardizirani magnezij in magnezijeve zlitine (glej 2.1);
a) nestandardizirani magnezij in magnezijeve zlitine (glej 2.2).

Overview

SIST EN 1754:2015 is a European Standard developed by CEN that establishes a comprehensive designation system for magnesium and magnesium alloys used in anodes, ingots, and castings. This standard defines both material symbols and material numbers to uniquely identify magnesium grades and alloys intended primarily for remelting processes. It applies to both standardized and non-standardized magnesium materials, providing clear guidance to manufacturers, suppliers, and users in the foundry and metalworking industries.

This standard supersedes the earlier EN 1754:1997 and aligns with recognized European and international classification practices, ensuring consistency in magnesium alloy identification across multiple countries.

Key Topics

  • Material Designation Systems
SIST EN 1754:2015 specifies two primary systems for material designation:

    • Designation by Numbers: Applicable exclusively to standardized magnesium and magnesium alloys. The numeric code consists of six characters, structured according to EN 10027-2 principles. It encodes the material group, product form (anode, ingot, casting), alloy group, and individual material number for precise classification.
    • Designation by Symbols: Applicable to both standardized and non-standardized alloys. It uses chemical element symbols alongside numerical content indicators. The system begins with a prefix “EN-” (for standardized materials), followed by “M” for magnesium, a product form symbol (A, B, or C), and detailed chemical composition coding.
  • Product Forms Covered
The standard addresses three main product forms:

    • Anodes (designated as 1 in numbers, symbol A)
    • Ingots (2 in numbers, symbol B)
    • Castings (3 in numbers, symbol C)
  • Alloy Group Classification
Magnesium alloys are categorized into several groups based on alloying elements such as aluminum, manganese, zinc, zirconium, rare earths, yttrium, and thorium. This classification supports precise alloy identification facilitating quality control and traceability.

  • Chemical Composition Representation
Symbolic designations incorporate the mass fraction of alloying elements in percentages, arranged by descending concentration with up to four main elements listed. For example, EN-MCMgAl8Zn1 refers to a magnesium alloy with aluminum and zinc.

  • Scope Exceptions
Magnesium alloys intended for aerospace use follow alternative designations defined by AECMA standards.

Applications

SIST EN 1754:2015 plays a critical role in industries where magnesium alloys are used due to their lightweight, corrosion resistance, and mechanical properties, including:

  • Foundry and Casting Operations: Enables accurate specification and procurement of feedstock materials such as ingots and castings for manufacturing.
  • Anode Production: Ensures uniform designation in corrosion protection systems using magnesium anodes.
  • Recycling and Remelting: Supports traceability and segregation of magnesium scrap based on standardized alloy types.
  • Quality Assurance: Assists in material certification, testing, and compliance with European standards through clear alloy identification.
  • Research and Product Development: Facilitates innovation in magnesium alloy formulations by providing a standardized nomenclature for new compositions.

Related Standards

  • EN 10027-2: Defines the numerical designation system for steels, which SIST EN 1754:2015 references for its numeric coding principles.
  • EN 1753: Covers magnesium alloy ingots and castings, many of which are classified using SIST EN 1754:2015 designations.
  • AECMA Aerospace Standards: Provide aerospace-specific magnesium alloy designations differing from EN 1754 classifications.

Benefits of SIST EN 1754:2015

  • Enhances clarity and uniformity in communication of magnesium alloy types across Europe.
  • Facilitates efficient material selection and supply chain management in magnesium alloy applications.
  • Improves interoperability between national standards by harmonizing alloy designation formats.
  • Supports regulatory compliance and reduces errors in alloy identification.
