Overview
kSIST FprEN 16186-9:2026 – Railway Applications – Driver's Cabs – Part 9: External Visibility for Metro Vehicles is a European draft standard developed by SIST and CEN/TC 256. This document specifies requirements for forward, lateral, and rear external visibility conditions in metro vehicle driver’s cabs, including the assessment of drivers' positions. Its scope applies to metro vehicles-both with and without permanent drivers-excluding short-distance shuttles. The metro vehicle definition aligns with EN 17343. Adherence to this standard helps ensure optimal safety, operational efficiency, and ergonomic design by addressing external visibility for drivers and other authorized users in the metro cab environment.
Key Topics
Driver's Field of Vision
The standard establishes guidelines for the forward, rear, and lateral visibility required from operator positions, considering both seated and standing driver configurations. It provides definitions and criteria for the primary and secondary vision areas.Anthropometric Data Considerations
The specification is based on driver anthropometric data to ensure that all operational staff, regardless of body size or position, have an unobstructed and adequate field of vision.Design and Assessment
General design rules are provided for driver cab access and layout. The standard details how forward visibility should be verified and assessed, including sightlines and reference surfaces for driver positioning.Windscreen Requirements
Criteria are defined for front and side windscreens, including cleaning, glare protection, de-icing, de-misting, and reduction of reflections. Requirements address both manual and automatic devices, as well as ergonomic controls.External Signal and Coupler Visibility
The requirements ensure the driver can see critical external signals from defined reference points and maintain a clear view of automatic couplers during operations like train coupling.Rear and Lateral Visibility
Guidelines for rear view devices and lateral windows are specified, focusing on uninterrupted visual access to passenger exchange areas and external personnel during operational situations.
Applications
Metro Vehicle Design and Refurbishment
Manufacturers use this standard when designing new metro trains or upgrading existing cabs to achieve consistent and compliant driver sightlines and ergonomic configurations.Cab Ergonomics Assessment
Consulting firms, rolling stock maintainers, and railway operators apply these requirements when evaluating cab ergonomics and visibility, thus supporting occupational safety and human factors engineering.Operational Safety and Regulatory Compliance
By following this standard, railway undertakings demonstrate compliance with European safety regulations, ensuring both driver-operated and semi-automatic metro systems support clear external visibility.Integration with Other Standards
This standard is referenced in tandem with other key railway application standards for windscreen specifications, reference masses, and general definitions, helping integrate cab design into the broader vehicle and system context.
