Protective clothing - Protection against heat and flame - Limited flame spread materials, material assemblies and clothing (ISO/DIS 14116:2013)
This International Standard specifies the performance requirements for the limited flame spread properties of materials, material assemblies and protective clothing in order to reduce the possibility of the clothing burning and thereby itself constituting a hazard. Additional requirements for clothing are also specified.
Protective clothing complying with this International Standard is intended to protect workers against occasional and brief contact with small igniting flames, in circumstances where there is no significant heat hazard and without the presence of another type of heat. When protection against heat hazards is necessary in addition to protection against limited spread flammability, then standards, such as ISO 11612, are more appropriate.
A classification system is given for materials, material assemblies and garments which are tested according to ISO 15025:2000, Procedure A.

ISO/DIS 14116
Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 14116 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 94, Personal safety -- Protective clothing and
equipment, Subcommittee SC 13, Protective clothing.
ISO 14116:XXXX supersedes ISO 14116:2008, which has been technically revised to include:
a) include test procedure for dry-cleaning in normative references;
b) include test procedure for non-woven materials in normative references;
c) modify clause in design requirements regarding garment overlaps;
d) modify pretreatment clause to include requirements for single use garments;
e) modify clause for ageing due to washing (maximum number of cleaning procedures as indicated by the
manufacturer);
f) include requirement for dimensional stabilty, including procedure when measuring dimensional stability;
g) modify pretreatment clause to specify that dimensional stability is carried out after five cleaning cycles;
h) modify test procedure for the flame testing of Labels, badges, retro-reflective materials;
i) include requirement and test procedure for burst strength testing of knitted materials;
j) include requirement and test procedure for tensile strength testing of non-woven materials;
k) include requirement and test procedure for tear strength testing of non-woven materials;
l) include requirement and test procedure for burst strength testing of non-woven materials;
m) modify requirement for tear strength of woven materials;
n) modify afterglow requirement for flame spread of Index 3 materials.
o) include statement for flame spread testing in regard to interlining materials for Index 2 and 3 materials;
