Part 1: General
FOREWORD
a) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical
Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their

IEC 62087‑1 has been prepared by technical area 19: Environmental and energy aspects for
multimedia systems and equipment, of IEC technical committee 100: Audio, video and
multimedia systems and equipment. It is an International Standard.
The first edition of IEC 62087‑1 together with IEC 62087‑2 to IEC 62087‑6 canceled and
replaced IEC 62087:2011 in its entirety. The first edition of IEC 62087-1 included the following
significant technical changes with respect to Clauses 1 to 5 of IEC 62087:2011:
– new information about operation modes;
– equipment that includes removable main batteries are now considered;
– light measuring equipment is now specified.
This second edition of IEC 62087‑1 cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2015.
This edition constitutes a technical revision and includes the following significant technical
changes with respect to the previous edition:

– updated comprehensive set of terms and defintions related functions and modes;
– ILMD is introduced;
– luminance and illuminance meter accuracy requirements are increased;
– power source and power meter references IEC 62301 (ED3), which includes improved
measurement uncertainty specifications;
– introduces a method to determine the screen area.

INTRODUCTION
The IEC 62087 series specifies the general conditions and procedures for determining the
power consumption of audio, video and related equipment.
IEC 62087-1 specifies the operating modes, functions, common conditions and procedures
relevant for all parts of IEC 62087 [1]. IEC 62087‑2 specifies signals and media that may be
required to determine the power consumption of some types of equipment. The specific
conditions and procedures for specific types of equipment are specified in IEC 62087‑3 to IEC
62087-8.
IEC 62087 (all parts) [2] currently consists of the following planned or published parts:

1 Scope
This part of IEC 62087 specifies the general requirements and test equipment for other parts of
IEC 62087. Requirements for specific types of equipment are specified in additional parts of
this standard and may supersede the requirements specified in this part.
Moreover, this part of IEC 62087 defines the different modes of operation which are relevant
for determining power consumption.
This standard is only applicable for equipment which can be powered by an external power
source. Equipment that includes a non-removable main battery is not covered by this standard.
Equipment may include any number of auxiliary batteries.
In order to assess compliance of a specific model of equipment with its declared power value,
a verification procedure for power measurements is provided in Annex B.

3.1 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the terms and definitions given in IEC 62301 and IEC 63474 ,
as well as the following apply. Annex A shows the conceptual framework of power modes and
functions.

EXAMPLE 1 A timer could provide the internal signal leading to reactivation.
EXAMPLE 2 The reactivation function can be indicated using a simple optical indicator (e.g. a light -emitting diode
(LED)).
