Tests on electric and optical fibre cables under fire conditions -- Part 1-2: Test for vertical flame propagation for a single insulated wire or cable - Procedure for 1 kW pre-mixed flame
Specifies the procedure for testing the resistance to vertical flame propagation for a single vertical electrical insulated conductor or cable, or optical fibre cable, under fire conditions. The apparatus is given in EN 60332-1-1. NOTE 1 Testing to EN 60332-1-2 may be performed simultaneously with that to EN 60332-1-3 if required. Recommended requirements for performance are given in Annex A. EN 60332-1-2 specifies the use of a 1 kW pre-mixed flame and is for general use, except that the procedure specified may not be suitable for the testing of small single insulated conductors or cables of less than 0,5 mm² total cross-section because the conductor melts before the test is completed, or for the testing of small optical fibre cables because the cable is broken before the test is completed. In these cases, the procedure given in EN 60332-2-2 is recommended. NOTE 2 Since the use of insulated conductor or cable which retards flame propagation and complies with the recommended requirements of this standard is not sufficient by itself to prevent propagation of fire under all conditions of installation, it is recommended that wherever the risk of propagation is high, for example in long vertical runs of bunches of cables, special installation precautions should also be taken. It cannot be assumed that because the sample of cable complies with the performance requirements recommended in this standard, that a bunch of cables will behave in a similar manner. (See EN 60332-3 series.) Has the status of a group safety publication in accordance with IEC Guide 104.
Overview
EN 60332-1-2:2004 (CLC) - also published as IEC 60332-1-2:2004 - defines a laboratory procedure for assessing vertical flame propagation of a single insulated electrical conductor, cable, or optical fibre cable using a 1 kW pre‑mixed flame. The standard specifies sample preparation, conditioning, positioning, flame application and test duration. The required test apparatus is defined in EN 60332-1-1. EN 60332-1-2 is a group safety publication (IEC Guide 104) and gives recommended performance criteria in Annex A.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Test of a single vertical insulated conductor or cable (electrical or optical) to evaluate resistance to vertical flame propagation under fire conditions.
- Test apparatus: Use the apparatus specified in EN 60332-1-1 (metal screen, supports, burner).
- Sample: Single insulated conductor/cable, nominal length (600 ± 25) mm.
- Conditioning: Ambient conditioning at (23 ± 5) °C and (50 ± 20) % RH for at least 16 h. Painted or lacquered samples require a 4 h preliminary 60 °C treatment.
- Positioning: Vertical specimen centrally mounted; 550 ± 5 mm between supports; bottom ≈ 50 mm from base of the screen.
- Flame application: Single burner with inner blue cone impinging on the specimen at (475 ± 5) mm from the upper support and an angle of 45° ± 2°. Safety precautions for smoke and toxic products are required.
- Test duration: Flame is applied continuously for a time based on specimen overall diameter (examples from the standard):
- D ≤ 25 mm: 60 s (or 120 s in some cases)
- 25 < D ≤ 50 mm: 240 s
- 50 < D ≤ 75 mm: 480 s
(The standard gives the full table and rules for equivalent diameter for non‑circular cables.)
- Limitations: Not suitable for very small conductors (< 0.5 mm² total cross‑section) or tiny optical fibre cables where melting or mechanical breakage occurs - for those, EN 60332-2-2 is recommended. The standard cautions that passing the single‑cable test does not guarantee the same behaviour for bundles or installed cable runs (see EN 60332-3 series).

The article discusses the testing procedure specified by the IEC 60332-1-2 standard for evaluating the resistance of electrical and optical fiber cables to vertical flame propagation. The article mentions that the procedure uses a 1 kW pre-mixed flame and is generally applicable, except for small cables or conductors with a total cross-section of less than 0.5 mm², which may melt or break during the test. In such cases, a different procedure specified in IEC 60332-2-2 is recommended. The article also emphasizes that using insulated cables that comply with the standard's performance requirements is not enough to prevent fire propagation in all installation conditions, and additional precautions should be taken, especially in long vertical runs of cable bunches.
