Aerospace series - Flammability of non metallic materials - Part 2: Small burner test, horizontal - Determination of the horizontal flame propagation
This document specifies the test method for the determination of the horizontal flame propagation of non-metallic materials when subjected to a small flame in part or in whole.
This test method is also used for testing non-metallic materials which have to meet the test criteria for the horizontal Bunsen burner test.
It is used for evaluation of non-metallic materials or constructions used in the interiors of aerospace vehicles but also may be used in other applications as specified in applicable procurement and regulatory documents.
This standard should be used to measure and describe the properties of non-metallic materials, products or assemblies in response to heat and flame under controlled laboratory conditions and should not be used to describe or appraise the fire hazard or fire risk of materials, products, or assemblies under actual fire conditions. However results of this test may be used as elements of a fire risk assessment which takes into account all of the factors which are pertinent to an assessment of the fire hazard of a particular end use.
Aeronavtika - Vnetljivost nekovinskih materialov - 2. del: Preskus majhnih gorilnikov, vodoravni - Ugotavljanje vodoravnega širjenja ognja

Overview
EN 3844-2:2019 - Aerospace series - Flammability of non-metallic materials - Part 2: Small burner test, horizontal - defines a laboratory test method to determine horizontal flame propagation of non‑metallic materials when exposed to a small flame. The standard is intended primarily for evaluating interior materials and constructions used in aerospace vehicles, and is also applicable where procurement or regulatory documents require the horizontal Bunsen burner test. Results describe material response to heat and flame under controlled conditions and can be used as part of a broader fire risk assessment (but not as a direct appraisal of actual fire hazard).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test principle: A specimen mounted horizontally is exposed to a small burner flame for 15 s; the flame spread rate is calculated from measured burn length and time.
- Specimen requirements:
- Minimum specimen area: 75 mm × 305 mm (or smaller if representative of in-service size).
- Thickness: no greater than the minimum qualified for aircraft use (≤ 3 mm).
- At least three specimens tested; anisotropic materials tested in both directions.
- Conditioning: (23 ± 2) °C, (50 ± 5)% RH for minimum 24 h.
- Apparatus:
- Draught‑free test cabinet with metal base and preferably matte‑black back for observation.
- Corrosion‑resistant specimen holder exposing at least 50 mm × 305 mm.
- Bunsen or Tirril burner (9.5 mm bore) with needle valve; no forced air supply.
- Burner fuel: methane (natural gas acceptable if >90% methane).
- Gas supply pressure: (17 ± 2) kPa at burner inlet.
- Flame height indicator: prongs at 22 mm and 38 mm; flame temperature (Type K thermocouple) ≥ 843 °C when adjusted.
- Test geometry & timings:
- Specimen lower edge 19 mm above burner top.
- Record times when flame front crosses gauge lines at 38 mm and 292 mm.
- Calculation: flame spread rate (mm/min) = (292 − 38) × 60 / (t292 − t38) when 292 mm is reached; if flame self‑extinguishes before 292 mm, record spread rate as 0.
- Documentation: test report must include apparatus, specimen data, conditioning, test results and observations.
