SIST-TS CLC/TS 50537-1:2010
(Main)Railway applications - Mounted parts of the traction transformer and cooling system - Part 1: HV bushing for traction transformers
- Abstract
This Technical Specification is applicable to high voltage (HV) bushings, intended for use in traction transformers of rail vehicles, cooled by insulating liquid with rated voltages up to 25 kV single phase and rated currents up to 630 A at frequencies from 16,7 Hz to 60 Hz.
HV bushings within the scope of this Technical Specification are bushings for separable connectors that connect the power supply coming from a contact wire or from a contact rail to the primary winding of the traction transformer. The Technical Specification only deals with HV bushings that are mounted to the transformer.
CLC/TS 50537-1 gives consideration to both technical and normative requirements of the railway environment and restricts the variety provided by industry-wide standards for bushings, such as EN 50180 and EN 60137. It determines requirements and tests enabling the interchangeability especially regarding electrical and mechanical interfaces. Furthermore, service conditions are described.
The cable plug as the counterpart of the HV bushing’s plug-in end is not covered by this Technical Specification.

SIST-TS CLC/TS 50537-1:2010 is the Slovenian adoption of CLC/TS 50537-1:2010, a CENELEC Technical Specification for railway applications. It specifies requirements and tests for high voltage (HV) bushings mounted on traction transformers in rail vehicles, so manufacturers, buyers and test labs can define the electrical and mechanical interface clearly. The document focuses on interchangeability, service conditions and verification of the bushing itself, not on the cable plug counterpart.
What does SIST-TS CLC/TS 50537-1:2010 specify?
SIST-TS CLC/TS 50537-1:2010 applies to HV bushings used on traction transformers of rail vehicles cooled by insulating liquid. It covers bushings for separable connectors that bring power from a contact wire or contact rail to the primary winding of the traction transformer, with the bushing mounted to the transformer.
The Technical Specification sets the framework for railway service conditions, interface dimensions, electrical withstand, mechanical strength, marking and testing. It also shows how this part fits into the CLC/TS 50537 series.
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Annex A | Informative examples for the mechanical flange, flange ring and pressure part |
The document is organised into clauses on scope, normative references, terms and abbreviations, operating conditions, electrical requirements, mechanical requirements, fire protection, reliability and lifetime, markings and testing, followed by Annex A and a bibliography.
What are the key requirements of SIST-TS CLC/TS 50537-1:2010?
Operating conditions
SIST-TS CLC/TS 50537-1:2010 requires the HV bushing to work under normal railway service conditions, including contamination, vibration and other stresses typical of rolling stock. In practice, this means the design has to tolerate the environment in which the transformer is installed, not just laboratory conditions.
Clause 4 gives the environmental ranges for the plug-in end, including temperature, altitude, humidity and the relevant environmental severity classes. It also covers storage, transport and cleaning, so suppliers need to consider packaging, cleaning agents and how the product will be handled before installation.
The immersed end must work with the transformer cooling liquid. Clause 4.3 expects compatibility with mineral oil, ester and silicon liquids, and it requires the bushing to withstand the temperature gradient between the immersed end and the plug-in end.
Electrical requirements
Clause 5 sets the electrical operating range and withstand behaviour. The HV bushing is designed for 25 kV single phase, 630 A and 16.7 Hz to 60 Hz, so these are the headline ratings a buyer will check first.
The insulation has to suit the maximum cooling-liquid temperature, and the temperature rise of the bushing is limited. Practically, this means the insulation system and thermal design have to match the transformer’s operating temperature, not only the nominal voltage.
Clause 5.4 and 5.5 link the bushing to railway supply and fault conditions through overvoltage and short-time current withstand. The document also requires an earthing screen to reduce the electric field inside and outside the bushing, and Figure 1 shows its position. That matters because the transformer tank opening and wall thickness affect the field distribution.
Mechanical requirements
Clause 6 requires the bushing to operate properly in all orientations, provided the immersed end remains sufficiently covered by the cooling liquid. The intended mounting orientation should be agreed, usually by drawing, so the transformer builder and the bushing supplier align on installation constraints.
The assembly, including fixings, must achieve at least IP67 and remain oil tight. This is important for preventing moisture and leakage issues in service.
The plug-in end and immersed end both use M16 screwing, and the essential mechanical dimensions are tied to EN 50180 type C. Clause 6.2 defines the mechanical envelope, and Figure 1 shows the maximum outer dimensions. Clause 6.3 also requires the mechanical fixings of the electrical contacts to withstand the operating conditions.
Fire protection, reliability and marking
Clause 7 links fire protection to the customer specification and points to the TS 45545 series as a possible test basis. For procurement, this means fire safety expectations should be settled early, because the document leaves the exact acceptance approach to agreement.
Clause 8 gives an expected lifetime of 30 years and states a reliability target using MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures). In practice, this gives buyers and maintainers a planning basis for life-cycle expectations.
Clause 9 requires a nameplate or label with the manufacturer, the bushing characteristics, serial number, manufacturing date, earth symbol and waste-disposal symbol or code. That supports traceability and installation in fleet service.
Testing
Clause 10 separates type tests from routine tests. Type tests verify the design, while routine tests check each manufactured item, although the document allows agreed alternative procedures for routine testing.
Table 3 lists the minimum test set, which includes tests according to EN 60137, alternating temperature, shock and vibration, impulse, power frequency, partial discharge, cantilever load withstand, X-ray and glass transition temperature. For a reader, this is the checklist for qualification and production acceptance.
