Fire classification of construction products and building elements - Part 5: Classification using data from external fire exposure to roofs tests

This European Standard provides the fire performance classification procedures for roofs/roof coverings exposed to external fire based on the four test methods given in CEN/TS 1187:2012 and the relevant extended application rules.
For the classification of a roof/roof covering, only those test methods and those application rules need to be applied for which the corresponding classification is envisaged.
Products are considered in relation to their end use application.
NOTE   The distinction between roofs with a steep slope and facades, in terms of the test and classification standard to be applied, may be subject to national regulations.
General information on the four test methods in CEN/TS 1187 is given in Annex A.

Proizvodi so obravnavani v povezavi z njihovo končno uporabo.

Overview

EN 13501-5:2016 is the CEN European standard for the fire classification of roofs and roof coverings based on performance in external fire exposure to roofs tests. It defines a harmonized procedure to convert test data from the four test methods in CEN/TS 1187:2012 into a formal classification for external fire performance. The standard supports regulatory requirements (Construction Products Regulation No 305/2011) and provides rules for specimen preparation, testing, classification parameters and reporting.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and intent

    • Classification applies to roofs/roof coverings in relation to their intended end-use.
    • Only the CEN/TS 1187 test methods and associated application rules relevant to the envisaged classification are required.
    • National regulations may differentiate steep roofs from façades for classification purposes.
  • Four CEN/TS 1187 test methods (used directly for classification):

    • Test 1: Method with burning brands
    • Test 2: Method with burning brands and wind
    • Test 3: Method with burning brands, wind and supplementary radiant heat
    • Test 4: Two-stage method incorporating burning brands, wind and supplementary radiant heat
  • Classification process

    • Defines classes of external fire performance based on test outcomes; tests represent distinct hazard scenarios and are not hierarchically comparable.
    • Covers specimen preparation, testing requirements, number of tests, classification parameters (e.g., time to fire spread/penetration) and field of application (direct and extended).
    • Requires a classification report (Annex B) documenting test reports, results and any extended application rules used.
  • Extended application

    • Uses procedures in EN 15725 for predicting performance beyond the tested configuration (extended field of application) and preparing extended application reports.

Practical applications and who uses it

  • Manufacturers of roof coverings and system components use EN 13501-5:2016 to demonstrate external fire performance for product development and market access.
  • Testing laboratories apply the CEN/TS 1187 test methods and report data for classification.
  • Certifiers, notified bodies and regulators use the classification to assess compliance with CPR and national fire-safety rules.
  • Architects, fire engineers and contractors reference classifications when specifying roofing systems for projects, particularly where external fire exposure risk is a consideration.
