Overview

EN 816:2017 - "Sanitary tapware - Automatic shut-off valves PN 10" is a CEN European standard for single and mixer sanitary taps with automatic (self‑closing) shut‑off for washrooms. It defines the scope, test methods and performance requirements for sanitary tapware intended to limit water use and ensure safety, hygiene and durability. The standard excludes urinal or WC flushing valves and valves that open automatically. All tests in EN 816:2017 are type (laboratory) tests, not production quality‑control checks.

Key Topics

The standard specifies requirements and laboratory test methods in these areas:

  • Marking and identification - labeling, designation and traceability of tapware.
  • Materials and hygiene - chemical and hygienic characteristics of materials and exposed surface finishes.
  • Dimensional characteristics - construction and mounting dimensions for single taps, mixers and in‑line designs.
  • Leaktightness and pressure resistance - tests upstream and downstream of the obturator to verify sealing and structural integrity under pressure.
  • Hydraulic performance - flow rate, flow curve and flow duration requirements, including water‑saving criteria and minimum operating pressures.
  • Mechanical properties and endurance - operating force, mechanical endurance (cycle testing) and wear resistance.
  • Backflow protection - basic requirements to prevent contamination of potable water.
  • Acoustical characteristics - laboratory noise emission tests and acoustic classification for water supply installations.
  • Operational limits such as flow (dynamic) and static pressure and temperature conditions are defined in the standard’s Table 1 (e.g., static pressure up to 1 MPa / 10 bar; hot water temperature recommendations and maximums are given).

Applications

EN 816:2017 is used by:

  • Manufacturers of sanitary tapware to design and verify compliance for market access across CEN member states.
  • Test laboratories conducting type testing for performance, durability, hydraulic and acoustic characteristics.
  • Specifiers, architects and MEP engineers selecting self‑closing taps for public washrooms, commercial buildings and healthcare facilities.
  • Certification bodies and procurement teams requiring documented compliance with European requirements for washroom tapware.
  • Plumbing professionals and installers who need to understand selection limits and installation interfaces.

Related Standards

Relevant referenced documents include:

  • EN 1717 (backflow protection)
  • EN 246 (flow rate regulators)
  • EN 248 (Ni‑Cr electrodeposited coatings)
  • EN ISO 3822 series (acoustics/noise emission testing)

Using EN 816:2017 ensures sanitary self‑closing tapware meets harmonized European performance, safety, hygiene and acoustic expectations for washroom applications.
