Overview

EN 50098-1:1998/A1:2002 is a CENELEC amendment (published 2002, implemented 2003) to the European standard for customer premises cabling for Information Technology - Part 1: ISDN basic access. This corrigendum updates the original EN 50098-1:1998 by specifying an alternative star configuration for dedicated ISDN basic‑access wiring and adding a normative annex on cable characteristics. The document was adopted by national committees and later appears in CLC legacy conversions.

Key topics and requirements

  • Star configuration for ISDN basic access

    • Intended primarily for domestic and SOHO environments.
    • NT (network termination) must be configured in short passive bus mode.
    • Maximum number of branches: 4.
    • Cabling distance limits from NT to farthest outlet in a branch: 50 m when installed balanced cables meet Category 3 (or mixed Cat3/Cat5); 100 m when installed balanced cables meet Category 5. Extension cords must not be used to exceed these distances.
    • Maximum number of telecommunications outlets: 12; maximum number of terminals (TE): 4.
    • Spurs are discouraged; if present they shall not exceed 1 m.
    • Polarity of each wire pair must be maintained end‑to‑end.
    • 100 Ω termination resistors must be permanently connected at the star point for proper administration.
    • Branches may be hardwired or connected using hardware in accordance with EN 50173-1.
  • Annex A (normative)

    • Specifies electrical characteristics and required attenuation for installed balanced 100 Ω and 120 Ω Category 3 and Category 5 cables (impedance, attenuation tables, propagation velocity, etc.).
  • Editorial and bibliographic updates

    • References updated to EN 60950-1 and EN 300 012-1; removal of obsolete ETS references.

Applications

  • Design and installation of ISDN basic‑access cabling in homes, small offices and SOHOs.
  • Guidance for cabling contractors, telecom installers, building owners, and facility managers who need to ensure compliant ISDN wiring layouts.
  • Useful for equipment vendors and integrators specifying termination, cable category, and distance limits for ISDN services.

Related standards

  • EN 50173-1 (connecting hardware for structured cabling)
  • EN 300 012-1 (ISDN UNI Layer 1 specification)
  • EN 60950-1 (information technology equipment safety)
