Agricultural machinery - Solid fertilizer line-distributors - Environmental protection - Part 1: Requirements
This Standard specifies requirements for the environmental safety for design and construction of mounted, trailed and self-propelled solid fertilizer distributors in lines, including such machines attached to a basic machine, used in agriculture and horticulture. It also gives the requirements for the minimum content of the instruction handbook. NOTE The standard is also applicable to drilling machines if it is stated by the machine manufacturer that the machine is suitable for fertilizer application.
Verteiler von Flüssigdünger;
oder Verteiler von flüssigen oder granulierten Schädlingsbekämpfungsmitteln;

Overview
EN 13740-1:2003 - Agricultural machinery: Solid fertilizer line‑distributors - Environmental protection - Part 1: Requirements (CEN) specifies environmental and performance requirements for the design, construction and user information of mounted, trailed and self‑propelled solid fertilizer line‑distributors. It covers machines used in agriculture and horticulture (including drills when the manufacturer states suitability for fertilizer application) and defines minimum content for the instruction handbook. The standard aims to avoid unintentional spreading and to ensure even, controlled application rates.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope & applicability
- Applies to line‑distributors (spreading or drilling) attached to a base machine; excludes liquid fertilizer equipment, pesticide applicators and full‑width broadcasters (see EN 13739 series).
- Hopper design and filling
- Hopper openings must minimise blockages (e.g., grids). Hoppers ≥1 000 L must permit filling from 1.5 m wide buckets or 1 000 kg big bags.
- Basic hopper must have litre scales covering 10–80% capacity with ±10% accuracy.
- Cleaning, emptying and spillage
- Hopper emptying/cleaning must be possible without unintentional release to the ground; tools supplied and stowage provided if needed. No spillage allowed during transport with feed closed.
- Flow rate control and calibration
- Machines with hopper ≥600 L require calibration aids (chute/collector) or automatic mass/flow control.
- Manual flow adjustment must cover ±20% of intended flow and be stepless or in ≤10% increments.
- Allowed deviation of obtained vs intended flow rate depends on magnitude (e.g., <25 kg/min: ±15%; 25–150 kg/min: ±10%; >150 kg/min: ±7.5%).
- Evenness and performance
- Transversal distribution deviation limits: max ±10% on level ground, ±15% on 10° slope; machines with >12 outlets require CV ≤8% (level) or ≤12% (10° slope).
- Speed proportionality: land‑driven machines must keep obtained flow proportional to speed within 10% when speed changes from 4 to 8 km/h.
- Hopper level effect: maximum deviations specified by flow bands (e.g., >150 kg/min: max 5% deviation).
- Mechanical protections
- Boom sections (>10 m working width) must fold back on obstacle contact and auto‑return; coulters on drills must have overload protection and adjustable depth.
- Instruction handbook
- Must accompany the machine, include uses, safe handling, maintenance, suitable fertilizer types, band widths, and calibration guidance (annex A checklist available).
Applications & who uses this standard
- Machine manufacturers & designers - to design compliant line‑distributors and prepare instruction handbooks.
- Test laboratories & certification bodies - use in conjunction with EN 13740‑2:2003 (Test methods) for verification.
