Overview
The European standard oSIST prEN 12875-1:2024:2024, issued by CEN, defines the reference test method to assess the mechanical dishwashing resistance of domestic utensils. This standard focuses on testing items made from materials such as ceramic, glass, glass ceramic, vitreous enamel, metal, and plastics under realistic combined chemical, thermal, and mechanical stresses experienced in domestic dishwashers.
This method serves as a benchmark for evaluating how these materials withstand repeated dishwasher cycles using a standardized procedure. It applies strictly to domestic dishwashing, excluding commercial or industrial dishwasher environments. The document specifies the entire testing procedure from specimen preparation through dishwasher loading, washing cycles, and inspection.
Key Topics
Scope and Materials Tested
oSIST prEN 12875-1:2024 applies to utensils commonly used in households, including those made from ceramics, glass variants, vitreous enamel, coated metals, rubber, silicones, and plastics.Test Dishwasher Setup
The reference test is carried out in a designated test dishwasher designed to simulate a typical domestic dishwasher. Key requirements cover water hardness control, temperature profiles, automatic dosing of cleaning and rinse agents, cycle timing, and mechanical actions.Test Cycle Procedure
The dishwasher test cycle includes:- Draining the dishwasher before the test start
- Washing phase with alkaline detergent at ~65°C lasting about 37 minutes, including heating and circulation
- Intermediate cold rinse
- Final rinse with controlled temperature and rinse aid application
- Drying with the door closed then open to simulate household conditions
Specimen Preparation and Loading
Test specimens must be unused and free from contaminants. They are arranged to avoid contact and ensure uniform exposure to water spray. Loading may include dummy articles to fully occupy the dishwasher capacity.Inspection and Evaluation
After testing, specimens are inspected for mechanical and surface changes under specified lighting and vision conditions per subsequent parts of EN 12875 (e.g., prEN 12875-2). While this part defines the testing method, assessment criteria and minimum cycles are outlined elsewhere.Water and Chemical Parameters
Test water must be potable, softened to low hardness, and control levels of chloride and copper are specified based on the material tested to prevent distortion of results (e.g., copper can cause plastic yellowing).
Applications
Quality Assessment of Utensils
Manufacturers and testing bodies use the reference method to verify the durability and longevity of domestic utensils when exposed to dishwasher environments.Material and Coating Development
Research and development teams apply this standard to optimize designs and surface coatings for enhanced dishwasher resistance.Compliance and Product Labeling
Helps producers support marketing claims regarding dishwasher-safe products by providing standardized resistance data.Benchmarking and Comparative Testing
Enables comparison between different materials or product lines under identical dishwasher conditions, fostering innovation and quality improvements.Supporting Safety and Performance Standards
Aligns with related safety standards for electrical appliances and household items, ensuring overall product compliance.

This document (prEN 12875-1:2024) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 194 “Utensils
in contact with food”, the secretariat of which is held by AFNOR.
This document is currently submitted to the CEN Enquiry.
This document will supersede EN 12875-1:2005.
This document includes the following significant technical changes with respect to EN 12875-1:2005:
— Adaptation of the test to the state of the art (test cycle, water quantity, detergent and rinse aid);
— Number of test cycles;
— Editorial changes.
Introduction
This document specifies a test method for the determination of the mechanical dishwashing resistance of
domestic articles. The results obtained according to this document are intended to serve for comparison
purposes for the dishwashing resistance of the different domestic articles and give an indication of
resistance only under the standard conditions of this test.
The dishwasher test method described in this document is both time consuming and expensive. However,
no single accelerated and inexpensive test is available which gives comparable results to the dishwasher
test for the whole variety of utensils made of various materials which are cleaned in dishwashers. The
test method described here is intended to be used as a reference method for dishwashing resistance.
Accelerated test methods may be used instead of the reference test method provided that valid
comparison to the dishwasher test is shown.
Consideration should be given to the normal use of each type of domestic article and its normal frequency
of mechanical dishwashing.
Further parts of EN 12875, under the general title Mechanical dishwashing resistance of utensils are as
follows:
— Part 2: Inspection and evaluation
— Part 4: Rapid test for domestic ceramic articles
— Part 5: Rapid test for ceramic catering articles
1 Scope
This document specifies a method for testing the resistance of domestic articles made from ceramic, glass,
glass ceramic, decorated glass, vitreous enamel, coatings, rubber, silicones, metal and plastics under the
combined chemical, thermal and mechanical stresses of mechanical dishwashing in domestic
dishwashers.
It specifies a reference test method for domestic dishwashing only. The minimum number of dishwashing
cycles is defined in EN 12875-2.
