Overview
SIST EN 62841-2-17:2018/oprAB:2024 is a draft amendment developed by the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CLC/TC 116). This amendment focuses on the safety requirements for electric motor-operated hand-held routers, transportable tools, and lawn and garden machinery. It revises and updates the existing EN 62841-2-17:2017 standard to enhance safety features and compliance with EU machinery directives, specifically Directive 2006/42/EC.
The standard addresses particular safety requirements tailored to hand-held routers, emphasizing construction, power supply control, and protection against unintentional starting. Proposed modifications improve the design and operation of these tools, ultimately reducing risks associated with mechanical hazards and electrical failures.
Key Topics
Power Switch Safety:
The power switch on hand-held routers must be a momentary switch without a locking feature in the “on” position. Alternatively, routers should not automatically restart after power interruptions without manual switch reactivation. This prevents accidental restarts, enhancing user safety.Isolation and Disabling Devices:
For battery-operated routers, the standard requires an isolation or disabling device to prevent inadvertent starting during servicing or maintenance.- Isolation devices must disconnect at least one battery pole from electrically live parts, show clear status indications, and guard against accidental reconnection.
- Disabling devices may include lock-off switches requiring two distinct user actions before powering on, preventing single-motion activation.
Battery Tool Modifications:
The standard updates provisions for tools with integrated batteries and those with mains connections or non-isolated power sources, ensuring consistent isolation and disabling device requirements across tool types.Risk Reduction Measures:
Requirements address risks related to moving parts, emissions, and mechanical hazards, aligning hand-held router design with the latest safety and reliability standards.
Applications
This standardized safety guidance is crucial for manufacturers, designers, and regulatory bodies involved with:
- Hand-held routers used in woodworking, carpentry, and various milling applications.
- Portable electric tools operating with integrated or external batteries.
- Transportable gardening and lawn machinery incorporating motor-driven hand tools.
- Ensuring user protection during normal operation, power supply interruptions, and maintenance.
- Facilitating market compliance and harmonization within the European Union and EFTA countries by meeting Directive 2006/42/EC essential health and safety requirements.
Adopting SIST EN 62841-2-17:2018/oprAB:2024 helps improve product safety, reduce workplace accidents, and ensure conformity for electric hand-held router products across international markets.
