Overview

EN 60454-3-8:2006 (IEC 60454-3-8:2006) specifies requirements for pressure‑sensitive adhesive tapes for electrical purposes that are made from woven fabrics based on glass, cellulose acetate, or cellulose‑viscose blends. Published by CLC/CENELEC and aligned with IEC, this sheet (Part 3, Sheet 8) consolidates earlier related publications and defines material classes, performance limits and test evidence required for electrical insulating tapes used in wiring, harnessing and electrical assembly.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and classification
    • Covers three product families: glass fabric tapes with pressure‑sensitive adhesive, cellulose acetate woven tapes with rubber thermosetting adhesive, and combined cellulose‑viscose woven tapes (one side thermoplastic, other side thermosetting adhesive).
    • Glass fabric tapes are further classified by thermal index and adhesive chemistry:
      • Type 1 - Thermal index 130 (rubber thermosetting adhesive)
      • Type 2 - Thermal index 155 (crosslinked acrylic adhesive)
      • Type 3 - Thermal index 180 (high‑temperature silicone adhesive)
    • Cellulose acetate and cellulose‑viscose types have a thermal index of 105 when required by purchaser.
  • Performance parameters specified
    • Physical: thickness, width, length tolerances
    • Mechanical: tensile strength, elongation at break
    • Adhesive: adhesion to steel and to backing, shear adhesion, flagging
    • Electrical: insulation resistance, breakdown voltage (including after humid conditioning)
    • Durability: thermal endurance (Clause 21 of IEC 60454‑2), electrolytic corrosion behavior, bond separation during/after thermal treatment
  • Testing and verification
    • All tests referenced to IEC 60454‑2 (methods of test) and IEC 60454‑1 (general requirements). Thermal‑endurance exposure temperatures and end‑point criteria (e.g., breakdown voltage limits) are specified for each type.

Applications and users

  • Practical uses:
    • Insulation and protection of electrical terminations, cable harnessing, coil wrapping, and general electrical insulation where woven fabric tapes are preferred for mechanical strength and dimensional stability.
  • Who should use this standard:
    • Tape manufacturers, material suppliers, electrical component designers, quality engineers, procurement specialists and testing laboratories requiring standardized specifications for pressure‑sensitive adhesive tapes in electrical applications.
  • Benefits:
    • Ensures consistent performance (thermal, electrical, adhesive) across suppliers and supports product selection for specific operating temperatures and environments.

Related standards

  • IEC 60454‑2 - Methods of test for pressure‑sensitive adhesive tapes
  • IEC 60426 - Test methods for electrolytic corrosion with insulating materials

This standard is essential when specifying or qualifying woven fabric pressure‑sensitive tapes for electrical insulation, providing clear classification, test criteria and performance limits to support safe and reliable electrical installations.
