Overview
EN 60335-2-80:2003 (CLC adoption of IEC 60335-2-80) is the European technical standard that sets safety requirements for electric fans for household and similar purposes. It covers common fan types - ceiling, table, pedestal, duct and partition fans - and applies to separate controls supplied with fans. The standard supplements and modifies the general safety rules in IEC/EN 60335-1, converting them into specific requirements for fans and replacing older standards such as EN 60342‑1:1981 and EN 60342‑3:1982.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and limits: Rated voltages up to 250 V for single‑phase appliances and 480 V for others; also applies to appliances used in shops, light industry and farms if they pose a public hazard.
- Interaction with Part 1: EN 60335-2-80 is used together with IEC/EN 60335-1; it adds, modifies or replaces Part 1 clauses where necessary for fans.
- Climate classification: Fans are classified for temperate or tropical climates. Fans for tropical climates are marked with T and certain tests (Clauses 10, 11, 13) are carried out at 40 °C ± 2 °C; temperature rise limits for tropical fans are reduced by 15 K.
- Ingress protection: Duct fans shall be at least IPX2.
- Marking & installation instructions: Must include items such as compatible luminaire types (if intended), suitability for mounting in outside windows/walls, a recommended blade height (e.g. blades more than 2.3 m above floor for high‑level fans) and precautions to prevent back‑flow of combustion gases for duct/partition fans.
- Tests and safety areas covered: Electrical, mechanical, thermal, fire and radiation hazards; specific clauses address heating, leakage current, moisture resistance, stability, mechanical strength and endurance. Note: Clause 9 (starting of motor‑operated appliances) is not applicable for this part.
- Exclusions: Not intended for exclusive industrial appliances, use in corrosive/explosive atmospheres, or fans incorporated inside other appliances.
Practical applications - who uses this standard
- Manufacturers and designers of household and similar fans (ceiling, pedestal, table, duct, partition)
- Test laboratories and conformity assessment bodies performing safety testing and certification
- Regulatory authorities, importers and retailers ensuring product compliance for European and related markets
- Technical writers and installers preparing manuals and installation instructions required by the standard
Related standards
- IEC/EN 60335-1 (Household and similar electrical appliances - Safety - General requirements): to be used conjointly
- Replaces: EN 60342-1:1981 and EN 60342-3:1982
EN 60335-2-80 provides the fan‑specific safety rules needed to design, test and certify household fans while ensuring consistent protection against electrical, mechanical and thermal hazards.
