Overview

EN 60335-2-80:2003/A1:2004 is a CENELEC-adopted amendment to the European safety standard for household and similar electrical appliances - Part 2-80: Particular requirements for fans (based on IEC 60335-2-80:2002/A1:2004). The amendment updates test conditions, marking and instruction requirements, definitions and specific protection, heating and moisture-resistance provisions that apply to domestic and similar fans, including duct-mounted units.

Keywords: EN 60335-2-80, fans safety standard, IEC 60335, household electrical appliances safety, duct fan, fan testing.

Key Topics and Requirements

  • Scope and basis: Amendments align the European standard with IEC 60335-2-80:2002/A1:2004 and were adopted by CENELEC members for national implementation.
  • Definitions: Introduces terms such as duct fan - a fan installed within an enclosed airway with ducted inlet and outlet.
  • Test conditions: Tests in Clauses 10, 11 and 13 are to be performed at the marked ambient operating temperature ±2 °C when the fan bears an ambient temperature marking.
  • Marking & instructions:
    • Fans intended for use in locations above 40 °C must be marked with the ambient operating temperature.
    • If guards must be removed for cleaning, instructions must explicitly state: ensure that the fan is switched off from the supply mains before removing the guard.
  • Protection against live parts: After removal of detachable parts for maintenance, internal wiring basic insulation may be touched if it is electrically equivalent to cords complying with IEC 60227 or IEC 60245.
  • Heating: Temperature-rise limits for fans marked with an ambient operating temperature are adjusted (reduced) by the difference between the marked value and 25 °C.
  • Moisture resistance & IP testing: External fans fitted to building exteriors are subject to spray tests (per IEC 60529, e.g., oscillating tube tests) both at rest and in operation. Fans marked with a second IP numeral undergo the corresponding IEC 60529 tests while at rest and running.
  • Mechanical strength: Existing mechanical strength provisions are maintained and renumbered (e.g., as Clause 21.1).

Applications

  • Product design and safety verification for domestic fans, bathroom/exhaust fans, window and portable fans, and duct fans.
  • Test laboratories performing type testing and compliance testing to European/IEC safety requirements.
  • Manufacturers preparing CE marking documentation and national standards compliance.
  • Regulatory and certification bodies assessing conformity to household appliance safety rules.

Related Standards

  • IEC 60335-2-80 (base international standard)
  • IEC 60529 (IP code - degrees of protection)
  • IEC 60227 / IEC 60245 (insulation and cord requirements)
  • CENELEC adoption and national implementations across EU member committees

This amendment refines safety, marking and test parameters for fans, ensuring consistent, practical requirements for manufacturers, testers and conformity assessors working with household and similar electrical fans.
