F17.60 - Gas
Gas
General Information
SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
4.1 This practice relies on a screening process using visual inspection followed by 80 °C sustained pressure testing to qualify a squeeze-off process.
4.2 Squeeze-off is widely used to temporarily control the flow of gas in PE pipe. Squeeze tools vary in squeeze bar shape and size, operating method, and available stop gaps depending on the tool manufacturer and the size of the pipe the tool will be used on. Multiple squeeze tools are required for a range of pipe size and DR combinations. Squeeze-off procedures can vary depending on the tool design, pipe material, pipe size and DR, pipe operating conditions, and pipe environmental conditions.
4.3 Experience indicates that damage leading to gas pipe failure is possible with some combinations of polyethylene material, pipe temperature, tool design, wall compression percentage, and procedure. This practice is useful for determining the suitability of a tool for squeeze-off and for determining acceptable limits for squeeze-off such as acceptable minimum and maximum pipe temperature for squeeze and acceptable line pressure for squeeze. Tests conducted at different pipe temperatures with various sizes of tools and pipes can be used to verify a range of temperatures, tool sizes, and pipe sizes for which the squeeze-off procedure is applicable.
4.4 The area of wrinkling at the ears on the inside diameter (ID) of the pipe and the area on the outside of the pipe opposite the ears are examined. Evidence of any one or a combination of void formation, cracks or extensive localized stress whitening, or failure during sustained pressure testing disqualifies the squeeze-off process.
4.5 Typical unacceptable features implying long-term damage are shown in Appendix X1 photographs.
4.6 Studies of polyethylene pipe extruded in the late 1980s (PE2306 and PE3408) show that damage typically does not develop when the wall compression percentage is 30 % or less, when closure rates are 2 in./minute or less and release rates are...
SCOPE
1.1 This practice covers qualifying a combination of a squeeze tool, a polyethylene gas pipe, and a squeeze-off procedure to avoid long-term damage in polyethylene gas pipe. Qualifying is conducted by examining the inside and outside surfaces of pipe specimens at and near the squeeze to determine the existence of features indicative of long-term damage. If indicative features are absent, sustained pressure testing in accordance with Test Method D1598 is conducted to confirm the viability of the squeeze-off process.
Note 1: This practice may be useful for evaluating the effects of squeeze-off of other piping materials. If applied to other piping materials, research testing to confirm the applicability of this practice to other materials should be conducted.
Note 2: Qualification of historic pipe should follow the historic version of F1734 closest to the pipe manufactured data.
1.2 This practice is appropriate for any combination of squeeze tool, PE gas pipe, and squeeze-off procedure.
1.3 This practice is for use by squeeze-tool manufacturers and gas utilities to qualify squeeze tools made in accordance with Test Method F1563; and squeeze-off procedures based on with Guide F1041 with pipe manufactured in accordance with Specification D2513.
1.4 Governing codes and project specifications should be consulted. Nothing in this practice should be construed as recommending practices or systems at variance with governing codes and project specifications.
1.5 Where applicable in this practice, “pipe” shall mean “pipe and tubing.”

ABSTRACT
This specification covers the requirements and test procedures for materials, dimensions, hydrostatic burst strength, chemical resistance, peeling strength, adhesion strength, and tensile strength properties for cured-in-place (CIP) pipe liners installed into existing metallic gas pipes for rehabilitation purposes. These cured-in-place pipe liners are intended for use in pipelines that transport natural gas, petroleum fuels (propane-air and propanebutane vapor mixtures), and manufactured and mixed gases, where resistance to gas permeation, ground movement, internal corrosion, leaking joints, pinholes, and chemical attack are required. The materials, which shall be considered separately for testing, consist of the flexible tubing, jacket, elastomer skin, and adhesive system.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers requirements and method of testing for materials, dimensions, hydrostatic burst strength, chemical resistance, adhesion strength and tensile strength properties for cured-in-place (CIP) pipe liners installed into existing metallic gas pipes, 3/4 to 48 in. nominal pipe size, for renewal purposes. The maximum allowable operating pressure (MAOP) of such renewed gas pipe shall not exceed a pressure of 300 psig (2060 kPa). The cured-in-place pipe liners covered by this specification are intended for use in pipelines transporting natural gas, petroleum fuels (propane-air and propane-butane vapor mixtures), and manufactured and mixed gases, where resistance to gas permeation, ground movement, internal corrosion, leaking joints, pinholes, and chemical attack are required.
1.2 The medium pressure (up to 100 psig) cured-in-place pipe liners (Section A) covered by this specification are intended for use in existing structurally sound or partially deteriorated metallic gas pipe as defined in 3.2.10. The high pressure (over 100 psig up to 300 psig) cured-in-place pipe liners (Section B) covered by this specification are intended for use only in existing structurally sound steel gas pipe as defined in 3.2.10. CIP liners are installed with limited excavation using an inversion method (air or water) and are considered to be a trenchless pipeline rehabilitation technology. The inverted liner is bonded to the inside wall of the host pipe using a compatible adhesive (usually an adhesive or polyurethane) in order to prevent gas migration between the host pipe wall and the CIP liner and, also, to keep the liner from collapsing under its own weight.
1.2.1 Continued growth of external corrosion, if undetected and unmitigated, could result in loss of the host pipe structural integrity to such an extent that the liner becomes the sole pressure bearing element in the rehabilitated pipeline structure. The CIP liner is not intended to be a stand-alone pipe and relies on the structural strength of the host pipe. The operator must maintain the structural integrity of the host pipe so that the liner does not become free standing.
1.3 MPL CIP liners (Section A) can be installed in partially deteriorated pipe as defined in 3.2.10. Even for low pressure gas distribution systems, which typically operate at less than 1 psig, MPL CIP liners are not intended for use as a stand-alone gas carrier pipe but rely on the structural integrity of the host pipe. Therefore, the safe use of cured-in-place pipe lining technology for the rehabilitation of existing cast iron, steel, or other metallic gas piping systems, operating at pressures up to 100 psig, is contingent on a technical assessment of the projected operating condition of the pipe for the expected 30 to 50 year life of the CIP liner. Cured-in-place pipe liners are intended to repair/rehabilitate structurally sound pipelines having relatively small, localized defects such as localized corrosion, welds that are weaker than required for service, or loose joints (cast iron pipe), where leaks might occur.
1.3.1 HPL CIP liners (Section B) are intended for use only in existing st...

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
4.1 The ATL value is used to set the break-away strength of a weak-link device, or to set other equipment used to limit pulling force during pull-in installation of PA12 gas pipe, or to determine if pulling equipment can exert pulling force greater than the ATL value for the PA12 gas pipe being installed.
4.2 The ATL value is determined before gas pipe installation.
SCOPE
1.1 This practice provides a means to determine an allowable tensile load (ATL) value for a polyamide-12 (PA12) gas pipe that is to be installed underground using methods that pull the pipe into a trench (cut or plowed), bore hole, casing pipe, or the like. The ATL value takes into account pipe size, tensile yield strength, pipe temperature, and pulling load duration.
1.2 The ATL is used to set the break-away strength for a “weak-link” device, or as a limit setting for other devices that control the maximum pulling force exerted by equipment used to pull PA12 gas pipe into an underground location, or to determine if pulling equipment can exert pulling force greater than the ATL value for the gas pipe being installed. A weak-link device is installed where the pipe pulling equipment is connected to the PA12 gas pipe. If pulling load exceeds the ATL limit, the device de-couples the pipe from the pulling equipment. Other measures or equipment that limit the pulling force on the pipe are also used. When the ATL value is compared to the pulling force developed by the pull-in installation equipment, and the equipment cannot exert a pulling force greater than the ATL value, a weak-link or other device for limiting the pulling force is not necessary.
1.3 This practice does not address weak-link device design or requirements, nor does it address the design or requirements for other equipment or procedures used to limit the pulling force applied to PA12 gas pipe during pull-in installation.
1.4 This practice does not address installation methods or procedures employed for pull-in of PA12 gas pipe.
1.5 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard.
1.6 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers crosslinked polyethylene (PEX) pipe that is outside diameter controlled in metric pipe sizes (DN 16 to 1000) and inch pipe sizes (NPS 3 to 54), and pressure rated (see Appendix X1) using the MRS rating system. This Specification is intended for PEX pipe made by various processes, as long as the PEX pipe made by that process meets all the requirements of this Specification. Included are requirements and test methods for material, workmanship, UV protection, dimensions, hydrostatic sustained pressure, stabilizer functionality, bent-pipe hydrostatic pressure, chemical resistance, minimum operating temperature, degree of crosslinking, squeeze-off, and hydrostatic burst pressure. Requirements for pipe markings are also given. The pipe covered by this specification is intended for natural gas distribution.
1.2 This specification also includes requirements for qualifying joints made using polyethylene electrofusion fittings (such as Specification F3373) and PEX pipe. Fittings to be used with PEX pipe manufactured to this specification are in Specification F2829/F2829M. Installation considerations are in X3.2.
Note 1: NPS fittings should not be used for DN sized pipe, and DN sized fittings should not be used for NPS pipe.
1.3 The text of this specification references notes, footnotes, and appendixes, which provide explanatory material. These notes and footnotes (excluding those in tables and figures) should not be considered as requirements of the specification.
1.4 Units—The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system are not necessarily exact equivalents; therefore, to ensure conformance with the standard, each system shall be used independently of the other, and values from the two systems shall not be combined.
1.4.1 For consistency with ISO 9080, MRS values are only in MPa and degrees Centigrade for conversion to the pipe material designation code (for example PEX pipe with an MRS of 8 MPa is called a PEX 80.
1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
4.1 The ATL value is used to set the break-away strength of a weak-link device, or to set other equipment used to limit pulling force during pull-in installation of polyethylene gas pipe, or to determine if pulling equipment can exert pulling force greater than the ATL value for the polyethylene gas pipe being installed.
4.2 The ATL value is determined before gas pipe installation.
SCOPE
1.1 This practice provides a means to determine an allowable tensile load (ATL) value for a polyethylene gas pipe that is to be installed underground using methods that pull the pipe into a trench (cut or plowed), bore hole, casing pipe, or the like. The ATL value takes into account pipe size, tensile yield strength, pipe temperature, and pulling load duration.
1.2 The ATL is used to set the break-away strength for a “weak-link” device, or as a limit setting for other devices that control the maximum pulling force exerted by equipment used to pull polyethylene gas pipe into an underground location, or to determine if pulling equipment can exert pulling force greater than the ATL value for the gas pipe being installed. A weak-link device is installed where the pipe pulling equipment is connected to the polyethylene gas pipe. If pulling load exceeds the ATL limit, the device de-couples the pipe from the pulling equipment. Other measures or equipment that limit the pulling force on the pipe are also used. When the ATL value is compared to the pulling force developed by the pull-in installation equipment and equipment cannot exert pulling force greater than the ATL value, a weak-link or other device for limiting the pulling force is not necessary.

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
4.1 Full-encirclement-type band clamps are recommended for repairs only where the pipe is able to maintain its structural integrity. These clamps are not recommended for permanent repair of pipe where the damage could propagate outside the clamp under anticipated field conditions (see 5.1.1 for repair limitations). In such situations, it is recommended to cut out and replace the damaged pipe with a new piece. Clamps that are used for repair should comply with the manufacturer’s specifications for use and the manufacturer’s installation instructions should be followed.
4.2 These clamps may be used to cover holes left in the pipe from abandoned service line connections, purge points, and accidental punctures.
4.3 These clamps may be used to reinforce the pipe where the wall thickness has been reduced because of gouges or other irregularities.
4.4 Some users reinforce polyethylene pipe after it has been squeezed-off as a precaution against pipe damage that may have occurred during the squeeze-off process and as a means of ensuring that the pipe will not be squeezed-off again at the same location. Consult with the polyethylene pipe manufacturer as to the appropriateness of squeeze-off for their product, and for circumstances when reinforcement is recommended. See Guide F1041.
SCOPE
1.1 This guide specifically addresses the design and installation of full-encirclement-type band clamps for repair of gouges, punctures, or holes, and for reinforcement of polyethylene plastic pipe. Guidelines are provided for selecting and using clamps in pipe sizes 2 in. nominal (60 mm) and larger.
1.1.1 A test method is also provided for the user to assess the applicability of the repair clamp. Under appropriate circumstances, this type of clamp offers a convenient, effective, and safe means of restoring the integrity of an in-service pipeline, without cutting out a section of pipe (see Note 1). The pipe to be repaired cannot be backed by a stiffener for internal support and cross-sectional dimensional control. Satisfactory use of this type of clamp should rely on the crush resistance of the pipe itself and a fitting design concept, which retains the cross-sectional pipe configuration while minimizing compressive forces required to obtain an effective leakage seal.
Note 1: The appropriateness for use of this type of clamp should be determined by using the information contained in this guide and from consultation with, and recommendations of, both the pipe and clamp manufacturers. The basic premise for use of this type of clamp is that it is recommended by the manufacturer for this specific application and that step-by-step installation instructions are available for that application. It is important in the development of this type of clamp that prototype testing be conducted to evaluate performance expectations because of the physical limitations encountered when designing it for use with plastic pipe.
1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard.
1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
4.1 The ATL value is used to set the break-away strength of a weak-link device, or to set other equipment used to limit pulling force during pull-in installation of polyethylene gas pipe, or to determine if pulling equipment can extert pulling force greater than the ATL value for the polyethylene gas pipe being installed.
1.2 The ATL is used to set the break-away strength for a “weak-link” device, or as a limit setting for other devices that control the maximum pulling force exerted by equipment used to pull polyethylene gas pipe into an underground location, or to determine if pulling equipment can extert pulling force greater than the ATL value for the gas pipe being installed. A weak-link device is installed where the pipe pulling equipment is connected to the polyethylene gas pipe. If pulling load exceeds the ATL limit, the device de-couples the pipe from the pulling equipment. Other measures or equipment that limit the pulling force on the pipe are also used. When the ATL value is compared to the pulling force developed by the pull-in installation equipment and equipment cannot extert pulling force greater than the ATL value, a weak-link or other device for limiting the pulling force is not necessary.
1.3 This practice does not address weak-link device design or requirements, nor does it address the design or requirements for other equipment or procedures used to limit the pulling force applied to polyethylene gas pipe during pull-in installation.
1.4 This practice does not address installation methods or procedures employed for pull-in of polyethylene gas pipe.

5.1 Squeeze-off is widely used to temporarily control the flow of gas in PE pipe. Squeeze tools vary depending on the size of the pipe and the design of the tool. Squeeze-off procedures vary depending on the tool design, pipe material, and environmental conditions.
5.2 Experience indicates that some combinations of polyethylene material, temperature, tool design, wall compression percentage and procedure can cause damage leading to failure.
5.3 Studies of polyethylene pipe extruded in the late 1980s and thereafter show that damage typically does not develop when the wall compression percentage is 30 % or less, when temperatures are above 50 °F (10 °C), and when closure and release rates are typical of field conditions for screw-driven tools.4 With tools meeting Specification F1563, acceptable flow control at typical gas service pressures is achieved at wall compression percentages between 10 and 20 % for pipe diameters less than 6 in.4,5 Because damage does not develop in these materials at such squeeze levels, the references cited indicate that squeeze-off flow control practices using tools meeting Specification F1563 and qualified procedures meeting Practice F1041 are effective for smaller pipe sizes.4 ,5
Note 3: Specification F1563 provides a procedure for evaluating tool flow control performance.
5.4 This practice provides a method to qualify a combination of squeeze tool, pipe size and material, and squeeze-off procedure to ensure that long-term damage does not occur. This practice is useful for polyethylene gas pipe manufactured before 1975, for new or revised polyolefin gas pipe materials, for pipe diameters of 8 in. or above, for new or revised squeeze tool designs, and for new or revised squeeze-off procedures.
If indicative features are absent, sustained pressure testing in accordance with Specification D2513 is conducted to confirm the viability of the squeeze-off process. For assistance with specimen examination, an Adjunct, ADJF17342, is available from ASTM.
1.2 This practice is appropriate for any combination of squeeze tool, PE gas pipe and squeeze-off procedure, and is particularly appropriate for pre-1975 Polyethylene (PE) pipe, and for pipe sizes of 8 in. or above, because of a greater possibility of long-term damage.
1.3 This practice is for use by squeeze-tool manufacturers, pipe manufacturers and gas utilities to qualify squeeze tools made in accordance with Specification F1563; and squeeze-off procedures in accordance with Guide F1041 with pipe manufactured in accordance with Specification D2513.
1.4 Governing codes and project specifications should be consulted. Nothing in this practice should be construed as recommending practices or systems at variance with governing codes and project specifications.
1.5 Where applicable in this guide, “pipe” shall mean “pipe and tubing.”
