General Information
This document specifies the recommended proportions for the symbols used in technical product documentation. It gives recommended dimensions based on the grid related to the line width to be used. This document does not apply to symbols used in process plant documentation, which are covered in ISO 81714-1. The proportions of the symbols are based on the standard heights of lettering given in ISO 3098-1.

IEC/IEEE 82079-1:2019 is jointly developed and published by IEC, IEEE, and ISO and provides general principles and detailed requirements for the design and formulation of all types of instructions for use that will be necessary or helpful for users of products of all kinds, ranging from a tin of paint to large or highly complex products, such as large industrial machinery, turnkey based plants or buildings. IEC/IEEE 82079-1:2019 cancels and replaces the first edition IEC 82079-1:2012. This edition constitutes a technical revision. It includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) The structure of this document has been rearranged in order to facilitate application of the standard and to make it easier to find information. Where possible, the language has been simplified. b) Information for use is introduced as a generic term. Instructions for use is a synonym for information for use. Step-by-step instructions is used as a subset of information for use. c) Clause 5 (principles) is revised and focuses on the purpose of information for use, the quality of information and the process for management of information. d) The process for preparation of information for use is integrated in the normative part and addressed comprehensively. e) Empirical methods for the evaluation of information for use are described in the normative part. f) The professional competencies needed for the preparation of information for use are addressed more comprehensively. g) Some aspects have been added to general requirements for information for use for complex systems of systems. h) Consideration is given to instructions for self-assembly products. i) An informative annex providing guidance on the fulfilment of specified requirements is introduced. This horizontal standard is primarily intended for use by technical committees in the preparation of standards in accordance with the principles laid down in IEC Guide 108. One of the responsibilities of a technical committee is, wherever applicable, to make use of horizontal standards in the preparation of its publications. The contents of this horizontal standard will not apply unless specifically referred to or included in the relevant publications.

ISO 16016:2016 specifies the protection notices which serve to prevent the improper use of documents and products whose usage is restricted. With the benefit of a uniform text, protection notices draw attention to the existence of an industrial property right or copyright. Furthermore, they clearly show that the owner of the right claims legal protection to the fullest extent and, in addition to this, they restrict the utilization of the documents or products concerned.

ISO 3098-1:2015 specifies the general requirements for lettering, in accordance with the other parts of ISO 3098, to be used in technical product documentation (in particular on technical drawings). It includes basic conventions as well as rules for the application of lettering using the following techniques: free-hand lettering (by means of an underlaid "grid"); templates and manual lettering instruments; dry transfer systems; numerically controlled lettering and draughting systems.

ISO 29845:2011 establishes and defines the types of documents required to be in the documentation for the specification of products, equipment and plants at all levels of complexity. It deals with the range of document types used from the conceptual phase to finished product, in all engineering fields. The purpose of ISO 29845:2011 is to facilitate a structure for (data modelling) product data management systems, to facilitate searching and retrieval of documents, to establish document types for the purpose of better communication and understanding between parties involved in document interchange, and to fulfil the requirement in ISO 7200:2004 regarding document type fields.

ISO 7200:2004 specifies the data fields used in the title blocks and headers of technical product documents. Its purpose is to facilitate the exchange of documents and ensure compatibility by defining field names, their contents and their length (number of characters). It covers manual as well as computer-based design work, and is applicable to all kinds of documents for all kind of products -- in all phases of the product life cycle and all fields of engineering. It contains document-management-relevant data fields but not fields for specific technology areas or product requirements. It supports the cross-use and re-use of documents.

This International Standard gives a method of establishing a flexible life cycle model and gives guidance on efficient and easy-to-understand handling technical documents during the product life cycle. The product life cycle takes different company-specific requirements into account, in accordance with project management techniques. For general use in connection with non-company-specific requirements, procedures, processes and products, it may be necessary to establish a standardized life-cycle model with defined phases. This International Standard is intended for use in companies, bodies of authority and other organizations who deal with manufactured products, with the compilation and use of technical documents during the product life cycle. It is not applicable either to services or software. This International Standard is intended to be an aid in controlling and coordinating documents, in accordance with ISO 9001, ISO 9002, and ISO 9003.
