Standard Specification for Labeled Length per Holder of Sewing Thread
ABSTRACT
This specification covers the requirements for the labeled lengths per holder of sewing threads of all materials. The test specimen is a thread holder whether a cone, tube, spool, ready-made bobbin, or any other holders. The observed length for all holders such as home sewing spools, ready-made bobbins, or all other holders which depends on the sampling size shall equal or exceed a certain percentage of the minimum allowable labeled length.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers requirements for the labeled lengths of sewing threads of all materials.
1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.
1.3 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Overview
ASTM D3693-02(2021): Standard Specification for Labeled Length per Holder of Sewing Thread is an internationally recognized standard developed by ASTM International. This specification defines the requirements for the labeled lengths of sewing threads of all materials, applicable to various thread holders such as cones, tubes, spools, and ready-made bobbins. The standard ensures that the actual length of sewing thread provided in each holder meets or exceeds a specified percentage of the labeled length, providing accuracy in labeling and confidence for manufacturers, suppliers, and consumers across textile and garment industries.
Key Topics
Scope and Applicability
The standard covers sewing threads of all materials and establishes the requirements for labeled lengths per holder. It applies universally to all thread holders including spools, cones, tubes, bobbins, and other forms.Measurement Units
All requirements are stated in SI units, ensuring global consistency and clarity.Sampling and Testing
- For home sewing spools, observed lengths must meet or exceed minimum percentages based on labeled length, as outlined in Table 1 of the standard.
- For ready-made bobbins, individual holders must reach at least 97% of their labeled length.
- For other thread holders, requirements vary depending on sample size, typically ranging from 95% to 98.5% of the labeled length.
- Sampling plans specify the number of specimens to be tested based on lot size.
Testing Procedures
The length of each thread holder is measured in accordance with test methods prescribed in ASTM D204, but with specific sampling directives from ASTM D3693.Conformance and Rejection
Materials not meeting the standard may be rejected, with a process for prompt notification and potential rehearing between supplier and purchaser.
Applications
ASTM D3693 is essential in a variety of practical scenarios involving sewing thread:
Textile Manufacturing
Ensures that purchased sewing thread meets declared length requirements, supporting quality control and production planning.Garment and Apparel Industry
Provides reliability in thread usage estimation and inventory management, reducing material shortages or excess.Home Sewing and Retail
Guarantees consumers receive accurate thread lengths as labeled, supporting consumer rights and satisfaction.Thread Packaging and Distribution
Ensures packaging lines and thread distributors accurately represent product quantity, maintaining trust and compliance with trade regulations.
By adhering to ASTM D3693, organizations demonstrate a commitment to transparency, quality assurance, and international trade compliance.
