Overview
prEN 12004-3 - "Adhesives for ceramic tiles - Part 3: Terminology, specifications, designation and marking" (CEN) defines terminology, product specifications and the designation/marking system for tile adhesives. It covers additional characteristics for three adhesive types used for internal and external tile installations on walls and floors:
- Cementitious adhesives (C) - mixed on site with water or liquid admixture
- Dispersion adhesives (D) - ready-to-use aqueous polymer dispersions
- Reaction resin adhesives (R) - one- or multi-component chemically curing resins
This document provides standardized definitions (working methods, application properties, final properties) and product classification but does not give design or installation instructions.
Key topics & technical requirements
- Terminology: clear definitions for methods (thin bed, floating, floating-and-buttering), tools (notched trowel) and properties (open time, pot‑life, slip, adjustability, deformability, adhesion strength).
- Performance characteristics: numeric thresholds for adhesion and other properties, for example:
- Cementitious: C1 (normal) initial tensile adhesion ≥ 0.5 N/mm; C2 (improved) ≥ 1.0 N/mm
- Dispersion: D1 initial shear adhesion ≥ 1.0 N/mm; D2 improved water resistance
- Reaction resin: R1 initial shear adhesion ≥ 2.0 N/mm; R2 improved thermal shock resistance
- Special modifiers: F (fast setting), T (reduced slip), E (extended open time), S1 / S2 (deformable / highly deformable) that combine with base types (e.g., C2TES1).
- Testing & sampling: refers to EN 12004-2 for test methods (adhesion, open time, slip, deformability) and to FprEN 12004-1 for essential characteristics and AVCP.
- Designation & marking: standardized labelling format (type + subtype codes) for consistent product identification on packaging and data sheets.
Applications & users
Who uses prEN 12004-3:
- Manufacturers - to classify, test and label adhesives consistently for the EU market.
- Test laboratories - to perform EN 12004-2 methods and verify compliance.
- Specifiers, architects, procurement teams - to choose adhesives by performance codes (e.g., C2FE, D1T).
- Regulators and conformity assessors - for harmonized marking and AVCP reference.
Practical value:
- Enables clear, searchable product selection (e.g., “cementitious tile adhesive C2 with extended open time”)
- Reduces specification ambiguity in public tenders and technical data sheets
- Assists quality control and compliance checks via standardized test references

This document is currently submitted to the CEN Enquiry.
This document with FprEN 12004-1:2021 will supersede EN 12004-1:2017.
In comparison with the previous edition, the following technical modifications have been made.
Splitting the former document into two parts:

— Part 3: Adhesives for ceramic tiles – Terminology, specifications, designations and marking.
The series of EN 12004 consists of the following parts, under the general title of Adhesives for
ceramic tiles:
— Part 1: Adhesives for ceramic tiles – Essential characteristics and AVCP
— Part 2: Adhesives for ceramic tiles – Test methods
— Part 3: Adhesives for ceramic tiles – Terminology, specifications, designations and marking
Introduction
It is essential that the characteristics of the construction products defined in this document consider that
the normal stresses due to the works for which they are intended, assembled or installed, can be properly
accommodated. Some special characteristics will take into account the type of substrate and that the
adhesives should resist the degrading actions of climate, etc.
Many properties of adhesives for tiling are mainly determined by the type of binders used. Different types
of tile adhesives are defined according to the chemical nature of their binders.
The different types of adhesives for ceramic tiles have specific characteristics in terms of their application
properties and final performance.
The relationship between characteristics and the working conditions (dry or humid conditions, hot
climate, fast setting, etc.) is not given in this document.
The manufacturer should give information about the use of the product and the correct conditions of use.
The specifier should evaluate the state of the job site (mechanical and thermal influences) and choose the
appropriate product considering all the possible risks.
