Overview
EN 12259-4:2000/A1:2001 is a European Standard from CEN that specifies construction and performance requirements for water motor alarms used with alarm valves in automatic sprinkler and water spray systems. It defines type approval tests, a recommended test schedule, and conformity assessment rules for manufacturers placing water motor alarm assemblies on the market. Auxiliary components or attachments to water motor alarms are excluded from this Part.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and compatibility
- Applies to water motor alarms used with alarm valves conforming to EN 12259-2:1997, EN 12259-3 and EN 12259-9 for systems complying with EN 12845:1997 and the relevant water spray standard.
- Construction and performance
- Requirements cover mechanical construction, hydraulic performance, response delay and operational reliability under normal and fire conditions.
- Type approval and testing
- Defines initial type testing for all characteristics in Clause 4 (and relevant Clause 5 items).
- Annexes A–G contain normative test methods; Annex H provides an example test schedule for type approval.
- Factory production control (FPC)
- Manufacturers must implement and document an FPC system (records, inspections, production tests); EN ISO 9001-based systems are acceptable.
- Conformity and CE marking
- Details attestation of conformity (System 1 under the Construction Products Directive), requirements for certification bodies, and CE marking information to accompany products.
- Durability and performance criteria
- Clauses address response time, durability of response delay, ageing of non‑metallic components, and resistance to fire exposure.
Applications and who uses this standard
- Manufacturers of water motor alarm assemblies use EN 12259-4 for design, testing and to demonstrate compliance for CE marking.
- Test laboratories and notified bodies apply the standard’s test methods and type approval schedules for certification.
- System designers, fire protection engineers and installers reference the standard to specify compliant water motor alarms for sprinkler and water spray installations.
- Building owners and regulators rely on conformity (CE marking, declarations) to verify product fitness for fire suppression systems.
Related standards
- EN 12259 series (Parts 1–12) - components for sprinkler and water spray systems
- EN 12845:1997 - automatic sprinkler systems
- EN ISO 9001 - quality management (referenced for FPC)
EN 12259-4:2000/A1:2001 supports harmonised product performance and market surveillance for water motor alarms in fixed firefighting systems, helping manufacturers and specifiers meet European safety and regulatory expectations.

8 Evaluation of conformity
8.1 General
The compliance of a wet alarm valve assembly with the requirements of this standard shall
be demonstrated by:
- initial type testing
- factory production control by the manufacturer.
8.2 Initial type testing
Initial type testing shall be performed on first application of this standard. Tests previously
performed in accordance with the provisions of this standard (product, characteristic, test
method, sampling method and system of attestation of conformity etc.) may be taken into
account. In addition, initial type testing shall be performed at the beginning of the production
of a product type or at the beginning of a new method of production (where these may affect
the stated properties).
All characteristics given in clause 4, and where appropriate clause 5, shall be subject to
initial type testing.
8.3 Factory production control (FPC)
The supplier shall establish, document and maintain an FPC system to ensure that the
products placed on the market conform with the stated performance characteristics.
The FPC system shall consist of procedures, regular inspections and tests and/or
assessments and the use of the results to control raw and other incoming materials or
components, equ
