Overview
EN 581-2:2026, published by CEN, defines the mechanical safety requirements and test methods for outdoor seating intended for camping, domestic, and contract (commercial) use for adults. The standard ensures a minimum level of structural safety, strength, reliability, and stability for all types of outdoor seats, regardless of material, design, or manufacturing process.
This European Standard is essential for manufacturers, suppliers, retailers, and testing laboratories who produce, distribute, or assess outdoor seating. It applies to products such as foldable camping chairs, loungers, contract-use outdoor seating, and domestic garden furniture, but excludes street furniture and does not address electrical safety, removable upholstery, castor durability, or ageing from environmental exposure.
Key Topics
General and Structural Safety:
- Requirements to minimize user injury risk, including smooth edges, burr-free surfaces, and secure load-bearing joints.
- Clear criteria for the design of movable and adjustable parts to reduce accidental operation or harm.
Stability and Strength Testing:
- Test methods for determining loading points, including special consideration for flexible or textile-based seating.
- Requirements based on tests for static loads, durability under repeated use, and stability to ensure the product remains upright under stress.
Shear, Compression, and Finger Entrapment Safety:
- All accessible holes and moving parts must adhere to strict rules to avoid risk of finger entrapment or compression injuries.
- Application of test probes and clear definitions of hazardous situations.
Instruction and Marking:
- Obligatory information for use, including assembly, maintenance advice, and safe operation.
- Marking requirements, especially for loungers equipped with wheels.
Scope and Applicability:
- Covers all adult outdoor seating for use at home, campsites, or commercial spaces.
- Does not cover decorative or permanently installed street furniture.
Applications
EN 581-2:2026 delivers substantial practical value across the outdoor furniture industry by:
Assisting Manufacturers:
- Ensuring their outdoor chairs, loungers, and foldable seating meet essential European safety benchmarks.
- Enabling easier market access across Europe by aligning with common safety expectations.
Supporting Retailers and Brands:
- Providing assurance that products are safe for intended use in domestic gardens, contract environments (such as hotels or public venues), and camping.
- Reducing liability and the risk of recalls or incidents.
Guiding Testing Laboratories:
- Detailed methodologies for testing strength, stability, and safety, using references such as EN 1728 and EN 1022.
Improving Consumer Confidence:
- Outdoor seating that meets EN 581-2 undergoes robust assessment for everyday and heavy-use scenarios, improving public trust in product safety.
Use Cases Include:
- Garden chairs and loungers used in private homes
- Foldable and portable furniture for camping or outdoor events
- Guest and poolside seating for hotels, resorts, and hospitality venues

4 Testing
Testing shall be carried out as specified in EN 1728:2012 and EN 1022:2023.
5 Test equipment
5.1 General
Test equipment is specified in EN 1728:2012 and EN 1022:2023.
5.2 Small cylinder to determine the loading point for seating with a frame which supports a flexible
sheet suspended in the upper part of the backrest and at the front of the seat
Cylinder shall have a mass of (1 ± 0,5) kg and a diameter of (70 ± 10) mm.
NOTE A suitable length of the cylinder is 200 mm.
6 Determination of the loading points
6.1 General
Seat and back loading points are determined in accordance with EN 1728:2012 and EN 1022:2023 except
for seating with a frame which supports a flexible sheet suspended in the upper part of the backrest and
at the front of the seat.
6.2 Seat loading point for seating with a frame which supports a flexible sheet suspended in the
upper part of the backrest and at the front of the seat.
The fully horizontal backrest’s position is not considered the rearmost inclination.
Place the seat on the floor.
If the seat has several pre-determined positions on inclination, put the product with the backrest in the
rearmost inclination.
Axis of the cylinder (5.2) shall be perpendicular to the median plane of the seat. Let the cylinder roll from
the higher part of the flexible part. Where the cylinder stops, this is the seat load point. See Figure 5.
If the flexible sheet is more than 1,1 m wide, by derogation from EN 1728:2012, the two load points are
located at the height previously defined by the cylinder (5.2) at a quarter of the width of the piece of
flexible material, on either side of the median plane.
Key

2 cylinder
3 axis of rotation of cylinder (perpendicular to the median plane)

7 Safety requirements for loungers
7.1 General safety requirements
The lounger shall fulfil the EN 581-1 requirements.
For products with adjustable backrest where the modification in inclination requires user to leave the
product, the modification of inclination of the backrest shall be considered as a setting up and folding
operation.
7.2 Stability and structural safety
7.2.1 Test sequence and parameters
The tests shall be carried out on the same sample, in the order listed in Table 1 and in accordance with
the intended use as defined in 3.1 to 3.3.
NOTE The intended use of a folding products is the relevant use as defined by the manufacturer in line with
the definitions 3.1 to 3.3.
The stability tests defined in Table 1 are not applicable to loungers which have both a seat
height < 200 mm and a mass < 5 kg. The height shall be determined by measuring from the floor to the
upper surface of the seat at the geometrical centre of the lounger seat loaded with 600 N applied vertically
downward using the seat loading pad.
In the case of seating which might not fulfil the stability requirements before carrying out any tests, the
applicable stability tests may be carried out before starting the sequence of tests specified in this table.
