This part of this European Standard specifies the minimum requirements that shall be met by measuring systems fitted on track geometry measuring trolleys and manually operated devices to give an evaluation of track geometry quality when using one or more of the parameters described in EN 13848-1. It sets out the acceptable differences from EN 13848-1 when using track geometry measuring trolleys and manually operated devices to measure track geometry.
It applies to all track geometry measuring systems fitted to track geometry measuring trolleys and manually operated devices after the date of implementation of this standard.

EN 13848-4:2011 (E) 5 1 Scope This part of this European Standard specifies the minimum requirements that shall be met by measuring systems fitted on track geometry measuring trolleys and manually operated devices to give an evaluation of track geometry quality when measuring one or more of the parameters described in EN 13848-1:2003+A1:2008. It sets out the acceptable differences from EN 13848-1:2003+A1:2008 when using track geometry measuring trolleys and manually operated devices to measure track geometry. EN 13848-4:2011 (E) 8 5 Track geometry measuring system fitted on trolleys or on manually operated devices 5.1 Introduction This standard concerns only the track geometry measuring systems installed on trolleys or on manually operated devices used to measure one or more of the parameters described in EN 13848-1:2003+A1:2008. 5.2 General description 5.2.1 General description: TGMT For the purposes of this document, the track geometry measuring system fitted on TGMTs is divided into several units as represented in Figure 1 below:

Figure 1 — TGMT Track geometry measuring system The track geometry measuring system installed on a TGMT is intended to:  measure track geometry parameters;  measure the longitudinal distance between measuring operations;  associate the precise location to the measured data;  process the measured data, preferably on site, in order to analyse the track geometry parameters;  record these parameters on computer readable media or on paper.

EN 13848-4:2011 (E) 9 The results of the above system can be used for track quality monitoring and safety assurance with respect to track geometry on track sections where maintenance works have been or will be carried out. This standard takes account of the capabilities of the TGMTs in its requirements and as a consequence some of the requirements of EN 13848-1:2003+A1:2008, e.g. loaded track, have been relaxed. There is no requirement for a TGMT to measure all parameters. The parameters to be measured and their processing shall at least meet the requirements stated in Annex A. Contrarily to the measuring systems fitted to track recording vehicles, the measuring systems fitted to TGMTs are not required to measure in both TGMT orientations. The computer system shall be suitable for outdoor use and be of a type which would be suitable for rail-bound machines. It shall represent widely- used and supported technologies. 5.2.2 General description: MOD For the purposes of this document, the track geometry measuring system fitted on MODs is divided into several units as represented in Figure 2 below:

Figure 2 — MOD Track geometry measuring system The track geometry measuring system of a MOD is intended to:  measure at least one track geometry parameter;  associate the precise location to the measured data, when data storage is included. The results of the above system can be used for track quality monitoring and safety assurance with respect to track geometry on track sections where maintenance works have been or will be carried out.

EN 13848-4:2011 (E) 10 This standard takes account of the capabilities of the MODs in its requirements and therefore some of the requirements of EN 13848-1:2003+A1:2008, e.g. loaded track, have been relaxed. There is no requirement for a MOD to measure all parameters. The parameters to be measured and their processing shall at least meet the requirements stated in Annex A. 5.3 Environmental conditions 5.3.1 Introduction All the measuring devices fitted on a TGMT or MOD shall comply with the environmental conditions specified below. 5.3.2 Climatic conditions Appropriate climatic conditions shall be taken into account in the design. These include:  ambient temperature;  condensation;  precipitation;  ambient relative humidity. 5.3.3 Operating conditions Appropriate operating conditions especially during transport, assembly and operation shall be taken into account in the design. These include:  grease on the rail;  reflection condition of the rail;  characteristic light conditions;  dust, water and snow;

 safety requirements (laser beam or conductor rail, for example);  user friendliness;  vibrations and shocks;  electromagnetic environment;  compatibility with signalling and communication systems. 5.4 Track features input 5.4.1 General The track features input supports the data localisation. The requirements for TGMTs and MODs are described below. SIST EN 13848-4:2012

EN 13848-4:2011 (E) 11 5.4.2 Track features input: TGMT The track features input shall include at least:  line identification;  track identification;  kilometreage. All of this data shall be entered manually or automatically. 5.4.3 Track features input: MOD The track features input of MODs equipped with data storage means shall include at least:  line identification;  track identification;  kilometreage. All of this data shall be be entered manually or automatically. There are no specific requirements for MODs not equipped with data storage to support data localisation. 5.5 Data localisation 5.5.1 Data localisation: TGMT The reference point for the data localisation system may be the kilometre post or other fixed points. The data localisation system gives the TGMT’s position along the track and shall fulfil the following functions:  Synchronisation of the position with the reference point by various methods, using for example the satellite based positioning system, active or passive beacons or other singular points;  Measurement of the distance covered by the TGMT and is generally based on a synchronisation signal, which could be given by a wheel-mounted encoder or any other equivalent method;  automatic correction or possibility of manual correction of the inaccuracies caused by:  wear, sliding;  difference of kilometre’s length;  uncertainty of the distance run transducer. NOTE Some TGMTs include a feature to compensate for any backward movement. 5.5.2 Data localisation: MOD When data storage is included, the reference point for the localisation may be a kilometre post or other fixed point. EN 13848-4:2011 (E) 12 5.6 Measuring system/device 5.6.1 Measuring system/device: TGMT 5.6.1.1 General Track geometry measuring relies on sensors, signal transmission and signal processing following various measuring principles as described in Annex B. 5.6.1.2 Sensors The sensors shall measure in real time the track geometry parameters or their components. The sensors’ mechanical and electrical characteristics (frequency response, signal-to-noise ratio, gain, etc.) shall be adequate to enable the generation of track geometry parameters, independently of the environmental conditions on the railway network. 5.6.1.3 Signal processing 5.6.1.3.1 Introduction A track geometry parameter is obtained from the signals coming from one or several sensors. The signal processing can include sampling, signal filtering, amplification and calculation. 5.6.1.3.2 Sampling The sampling for track geometry signals shall be triggered by a distance-based event so that the measurements are spatially orientated at equal intervals along the length of the track. All measurements shall be sampled at constant distance based intervals not larger than 0,5 m. 5.6.1.3.3 Filtering The filter characteristics like the transition (cut-off) wavelength, type of filter and the rate of attenuation (number of poles) shall be specified. To prevent aliasing of the data, the analogue signal shall be filtered in accordance with the sampling theorem. If filters are applied to the recorded track data, they shall have the following main characteristics:  lower cut-off wavelength, defined at –3 dB, Lo = lower limit of at least wavelength range D1 (for high-pass and band-pass filters);

 upper cut-off wavelength, defined at –3 dB, Lu = upper limit of at least wavelength range D1 (for low-pass and band-pass filters);  slope of at least 24 dB/octave. 5.6.2 Measuring system/device: MOD 5.6.2.1 General Track geometry measuring relies on sensors and signal transmission following various measuring principles as described in Annex B. EN 13848-4:2011 (E) 13 5.6.2.2 Sensors The sensors’ electrical and/or mechanical characteristics (frequency response, signal-to-noise ratio, gain, etc.) shall be adequate to enable the generation of track geometry parameters, independently of the environmental conditions on the railway network. 5.7 Data processing 5.7.1 Data processing: TGMT 5.7.1.1 General requirements If the data processing is done aboard the trolley, then the system hardware shall meet all the requirements stated in 5.3. The software should be flexible and modular. An increase in the number of input signals as well as of the number of calculations made should be foreseen in the system design. 5.7.1.2 Parameter generation The signals processed as described in 5.6.1.3 shall be combined in order to obtain parameters complying with requirements of Annex A. 5.7.1.3 Preparation for output interfaces The data processing system shall condition signals and associated information, and shall provide data storage. 5.7.2 Data processing: MOD There are no specific requirements for MODs whether or not they are equipped with data storage means. 5.8 Data output 5.8.1 Data output: TGMT 5.8.1.1 Visualisation The general characteristics for the user’s interface shall include:  representation of the measured parameters in graphical or data (numerical) form;

 the localisation information and distance run from the starting point. 5.8.1.2 Output of analysis results Outputs shall be provided in accordance with Annex A. 5.8.1.3 Data transfer The data shall be transferable using removable storage media, a network or a radio link complying with an industry standard. For MODs equipped with data storage means, the data shall be transferable using removable storage media, a network or a radio link complying with an industry standard. 5.9 Data storage 5.9.1 Data storage: TGMT As a minimum, the following data shall be stored in a prescribed retrievable format:  those parameters described in Annex A that are measured;  the result of any onboard processing including settings and software version;  the localisation information or distance run from the starting point;  the date and time of the recording;  identification of the TGMT;  user remarks and actions. 5.9.2 Data storage: MOD It is recommended that the following data be transcribed to a computer file:  those parameters described in Annex A that are measured;  the localisation information or distance from the starting point;  the date and time of the recording;  the identification of the MOD and of the user. 6 Testing of track geometry measuring system 6.1 Testing: TGMT 6.1.1 General This clause covers actions and procedures, which are necessary to ensure effective operation of the measuring devices and the corresponding processing system if present.
