Characterization of waste - Leaching behaviour test - Influence of pH on leaching with continuous pH control
This European Standard specifies a method for the determination of the influence of pH on the leachability of inorganic constituents from a waste material. Approaching equilibrium as defined in this European Standard is established by continuous adjustment of the pH by addition of acid or base to reach desired pH values. This test method produces eluates, which are subsequently characterized physically and chemically.
This European Standard is a parameter specific test as specified in EN 12920. The application of this test method alone is not sufficient for the determination of the detailed leaching behaviour of a waste under specified conditions.

Overview
EN 14997:2015 - Characterization of waste: Leaching behaviour test - Influence of pH on leaching with continuous pH control specifies a laboratory method to determine how pH affects the leachability of inorganic constituents from waste materials. The method uses continuous automated adjustment of pH (acid/base addition) to approach chemical equilibrium and produces eluates that are subsequently characterized physically and chemically. EN 14997:2015 is a parameter‑specific test (per EN 12920) intended for basic characterization and is not sufficient alone to fully describe detailed leaching behaviour under all scenarios.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Focus on inorganic constituents and their pH‑dependent release from wastes, sludges, soils and construction materials.
- Continuous pH control: Automated addition of acid or base during the leaching procedure to maintain target pH values and approach equilibrium.
- Sample preparation and test portions: Laboratory sample reduction and preparation procedures to ensure representative test portions (references to EN 15002 and EN 14899).
- Leaching procedure and contact time: Defined contact times and controlled leachant preparation to generate eluates for analysis.
- Eluate analysis and storage: Physical and chemical characterization of eluates, with analytical requirements aligned to EN 16192 and good laboratory water practices (EN ISO 3696; EN ISO 5667‑3).
- Quality controls: Blank tests, performance characteristics (Annex E), and reporting requirements (Annex A and Clause 13).
- Supporting tools: Annexes cover titration procedures for acid/base neutralization capacity (Annex C), interpretation and uses (Annex B) and examples for data treatment.
Applications and practical value
Who uses EN 14997:2015:
- Environmental testing laboratories and consultants
- Waste producers and recyclers assessing reuse or disposal options
- Landfill operators and regulators performing basic characterization
- Researchers studying pH‑dependent mobility of metals and salts
Practical uses:
- Identify pH-sensitive release of metals and inorganic contaminants to inform risk assessments.
- Support basic characterization programs required for compliance testing and landfill decision making.
- Compare leaching behaviour across materials or track changes due to treatment/aging.
- Provide eluate data for modelling environmental release and leachate generation scenarios.

The article discusses the EN 14997:2015 standard, which focuses on determining how pH affects the leachability of inorganic constituents from waste materials. The standard involves continuously adjusting the pH levels through the addition of acid or base to achieve desired pH values. This method produces eluates that are then analyzed both physically and chemically. However, it is important to note that this test alone is not enough to fully understand the leaching behavior of a waste material under specific conditions.
