Overview

prEN 10250-2: Open Die Steel Forgings for General Engineering Purposes - Part 2: Non-alloy Quality and Special Steels is a draft European Standard developed by CEN, covering the technical requirements for open die steel forgings, forged bars, and ring-rolled products manufactured from non-alloy quality and special steels. This document addresses steel products supplied in normalized, normalized and tempered, quenched and tempered, or annealed conditions. It replaces the 2022 edition, refining steel designations, mechanical values, and technical references to ensure quality and consistency in general engineering applications.

Key Topics

  • Chemical Composition: Specifies requirements for cast and product analyses, consistent with referenced standards. Manufacturers must control elemental additions to guarantee steel hardenability and property consistency.
  • Heat Treatment: Outlines supply conditions, including normalization, tempering, quenching, and annealing, depending on grade and end-use.
  • Mechanical Properties: Provides guidelines on tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, impact value, and hardness according to steel grade and product thickness.
  • Delivery Conditions: Details on technical documentation, product compliance, and conformity to European delivery requirements.

Applications

Open die steel forgings and forged bars produced according to prEN 10250-2 are widely used in general engineering sectors where high reliability and material integrity are crucial. Typical applications include:

  • Machine building: Structural components, shafts, gears, and machinery parts requiring consistent mechanical properties.
  • Heavy engineering: Components for construction equipment, mining, and material handling.
  • Energy sector: Supporting elements for wind turbines, generators, and other energy infrastructure.
  • Transport and automotive: Critical connecting and supporting parts, where controlled properties are vital for safety and durability.
  • Ring rolled products: Used in applications demanding robust circular components, such as flanges and bearings.

By adhering to this standard, end users benefit from predictable hardenability, robust mechanical performance, and traceability-essential for demanding engineering environments.

Related Standards

The requirements and guidance in prEN 10250-2 are closely related to several key international standards, promoting interoperability and streamlining procurement:

  • EN 10250-1: General requirements for open die steel forgings, used in conjunction with this document for complete specification.
  • EN ISO 683-1 & EN ISO 683-2: These standards provide additional details on hardenability and technological properties for non-alloy and alloy steels suitable for quenching and tempering.
  • EN 10021: Lays out general technical delivery conditions for steel products, ensuring documentation and compliance.
  • EN ISO 6506-1: Defines the Brinell hardness test method for applicable steel grades.
  • ISO 4885: Offers terminology and vocabulary on heat treatment processes for ferrous materials.

Practical Value

Companies adopting prEN 10250-2 benefit from:

  • Harmonized quality: Meeting European and international market requirements for open die steel forgings.
  • Operational efficiency: Streamlined procurement and technical communication through a unified reference.
  • Consistent performance: Reliable mechanical and chemical properties tailored to engineering needs.
  • Enhanced compliance: Alignment with recognized CEN and ISO standards improves supplier and customer confidence.

By referencing prEN 10250-2 for non-alloy quality and special steel forgings, engineers and procurement specialists ensure their products meet demanding industry expectations for durability, safety, and traceability.
