Overview

EN ISO 10365:2022 is an international standard developed by CEN and ISO, specifying the designation of primary failure patterns in bonded assemblies. This standard is essential for professionals working with adhesives, as it establishes clear terminology and visual identification criteria for common failure types observed in mechanical testing of adhesive joints. EN ISO 10365:2022 applies universally to any bonded assembly, regardless of the materials of the adherends or the type of adhesive involved.

Key Topics

  • Standardization of Failure Patterns: The document provides a comprehensive list of the main types of failure modes, such as substrate failure, cohesive failure, adhesion failure, and mixed or oscillating failures. Each failure pattern is designated by a specific code for clarity and consistency.
  • Visual Aids: Diagrams and illustrations accompany each designated failure type, helping users visually differentiate between adhesive, cohesive, and other forms of rupture.
  • Terminology: Clear definitions of key terms (e.g., adhesion failure, cohesion failure, substrate failure) to foster a common language in reporting and interpreting mechanical test results.
  • Guidance on Mixed Failures: The standard provides guidance on recording and expressing complex failures, including percentages for mixed failures and special notation for oscillating failures.
  • Cross-application: Usable in all mechanical tests involving adhesives, including both laboratory and industrial evaluations.

Applications

EN ISO 10365:2022 adds practical value across a variety of industries and settings, including:

  • Quality Control: Enables manufacturers of adhesives and bonded assemblies to standardize reporting and ensure consistent quality assessments.
  • Research & Development: Facilitates clear communication of failure patterns in academic and industrial adhesive testing, supporting material improvements.
  • Product Certification: Helps in comparing and certifying products according to internationally recognized adhesive failure patterns.
  • Technical Reporting: Standardizes how engineers and technicians document the performance of adhesive joints, simplifying the interpretation and comparison of test results.
  • Training & Education: Serves as a reference for training laboratory technicians and engineers in the correct identification and classification of failure patterns in adhesive testing.

Related Standards

EN ISO 10365:2022 is part of a broader family of adhesive and testing standards. Relevant references include:

  • ISO 472 - Plastics-Vocabulary: Provides key terminology used throughout EN ISO 10365:2022.
  • Adhesive Testing Standards: EN ISO 10365:2022 supports a wide range of test methods for adhesives by providing a referenced system for identifying mechanical failure patterns.
  • ISO 10365:1992 (superseded): The 2022 edition introduces updates such as new designations for stress whitening and bondline corrosion failures.
  • Industry-specific Standards: This standard is compatible with both ISO and CEN frameworks and can be used alongside other adhesive-related standards in construction, automotive, aerospace, and packaging industries.

Practical Value

By adopting EN ISO 10365:2022, organizations can:

  • Achieve precise, reproducible communication regarding adhesive joint failures
  • Improve consistency in reporting adhesive test results across global supply chains
  • Reduce ambiguity in failure analysis and support continuous product improvement

This standard is a foundational tool for anyone involved in adhesive selection, application, or evaluation, supporting robust quality assurance and technical documentation worldwide.
