Overview
EN ISO 4165:2003 – Road Vehicles - Electrical Connections - Double-Pole Connection (ISO 4165:2001), published by CEN, sets a unified standard for the dimensions and electrical characteristics of double-pole electrical connectors in road vehicles. The primary purpose of this standard is to ensure interchangeability for electrical connections used to supply additional appliances in vehicles with a nominal supply voltage of 12V or 24V direct current (DC).
This standard plays a crucial role in the design, manufacturing, and maintenance of automotive electrical systems, especially where reliable power supply to auxiliary devices is necessary.
Key Topics
Double-pole connectors
Specifies dimensions and technical characteristics ensuring compatibility and safe operation when connecting additional electrical appliances.Voltage compatibility
Covers systems with a nominal supply voltage of 12V or 24V DC, typical in passenger and commercial vehicles.Physical interchangeability
Sets standard dimensions for plugs and sockets, enabling use between different manufacturers and markets.Electrical performance requirements
Details maximum and minimum connection/disconnection forces, temperature rise limits, connection resistance (voltage drop), and high-voltage withstand capabilities.Testing protocols
Referenced tests include those for temperature rise, humidity cycling, durability (insertion cycles), and voltage drop, ensuring the long-term reliability of connections.
Applications
The EN ISO 4165:2003 standard is widely applied in the automotive industry for the following:
Supplying auxiliary devices:
Ensures safe and reliable electrical connections for extra equipment such as portable refrigerators, chargers, and navigation systems.Vehicle modification and aftermarket:
Facilitates seamless upgrades, retrofitting, or replacement of connectors without the risk of incompatibility.Passenger and commercial vehicles:
Used both inside protected areas, like passenger and luggage compartments, and-if further protected-externally.Fleet maintenance and international trade:
Supports interoperability across different manufacturers and national markets, simplifying global supply chains and vehicle servicing.
The standard's clear specifications on connector dimensions and electrical behavior protect vehicle wiring and devices from electrical faults and ensure consistent performance.
Related Standards
For comprehensive vehicle electrical system design and conformity, refer to the following standards closely related to EN ISO 4165:2003:
ISO 6722:
Focuses on dimensions, test methods, and requirements for single-core cables up to 60V and 600V used in road vehicles.ISO 8092-2:
Describes definitions, test methods, and general performance requirements for electrical connectors in on-board wiring harnesses.
These referenced standards provide additional technical background for cable selection, connector testing, and overall automotive electrical system reliability.
By adhering to EN ISO 4165:2003, automotive manufacturers, suppliers, and maintenance providers ensure robust, interoperable, and safe electrical connections in a wide range of road vehicle applications. Consistency with this standard streamlines component sourcing, engineering processes, and international vehicle compliance, marking it as a cornerstone for automotive electrical infrastructure.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO
member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical
committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in
liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical
Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 3.
