EN 14214:2012/FprA1 Overview
EN 14214:2012/FprA1 is a European standard developed by CEN, focusing on fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) derived from liquid petroleum products. It specifies requirements and test methods for FAME fuels used in diesel engines and heating applications. The 2013 amendment enhances various technical aspects to optimize fuel performance, safety, and compliance.
This standard is crucial for manufacturers, fuel producers, and quality controllers dealing with biofuels, especially FAME intended for blending with conventional diesel or standalone use in heating systems.
Key Updates and Topics
The EN 14214:2012/FprA1 amendment introduces several important modifications:
Enhanced Annex A Precision Data
Updated and expanded reproducibility information for all FAME test methods, assisting operators and quality managers in reliable fuel analysis and compliance assurance.Distilled FAME Product Definition
Clearer classification and description of distilled FAME products, including blend restrictions, ensuring product consistency and correct labeling.Co-existence with EN 590 Standard
Clarification regarding FAME’s simultaneous application alongside EN 590 diesel fuel standards, reflecting its use in B30 diesel blends and other applications.Use of Dyes and Markers
Provisions allowing legally required dyes and markers in heating fuels, supporting regulatory compliance without compromising fuel performance or quality test accuracy.Cold Filter Plugging Point (CFPP) Test Methodology Update
An updated methodology for CFPP determination enhances the reliability of cold-weather performance evaluation.Updated Reference Standards
Inclusion and revision of referenced standards such as prEN 12662 for total contamination, prEN 15751 for oxidation stability, and EN 16329 for cold filter plugging point - all targeted at improving test accuracy and fuel handling.
Applications of EN 14214:2012/FprA1
This standard is designed for practical use in:
Diesel Engine Fuels
Ensuring biofuel compatibility, quality, and engine performance when using FAME in pure form or blended with petroleum diesel fuels (e.g., B30 blends).Heating Fuel Applications
Standardized quality requirements and permissible additives like dyes facilitate safe and efficient use of FAME-based fuels in heating systems.Quality Control and Laboratory Testing
Provides comprehensive test methods and precision data for critical parameters-such as density, viscosity, acid value, oxidation stability, glyceride content, and contaminants-to maintain consistent fuel quality.Regulatory Compliance
Helps fuel producers meet European biofuel mandates and supports national standards organizations in harmonizing fuel specifications.
Related Standards
EN 14214:2012/FprA1 interacts with and references several critical standards:
- EN 590: Diesel fuel quality standard, important due to FAME’s blending role.
- prEN 12662:2012: Total contamination testing in diesel fuels and FAME.
- prEN 15751:2012: Accelerated oxidation stability testing for FAME fuels.
- EN 16329:2013: Cold Filter Plugging Point (CFPP) determination by linear cooling method.
