Overview

The EN 20286-2:1993/prA1 standard, titled ISO system of limits and fits - Part 2: Tables of standard tolerance grades and limit deviations for holes and shafts - Amendment 1 (ISO 286-2:1993/DAM 1:2008), is a key technical document issued by CEN (European Committee for Standardization). This amendment refines and updates the tables of standardized tolerance grades and corresponding limit deviations for holes and shafts, indispensable in precision engineering and manufacturing.

The document provides comprehensive tables and definitions to support the ISO system of limits and fits, enabling consistent dimensional control of cylindrical workpieces such as holes and shafts. It aligns with updates from ISO 286-1 regarding nominal sizes, replacing earlier references to basic sizes, and reflects improvements in dimensional and geometrical product specifications for industrial applications.

Key Topics

  • Standard Tolerance Grades: Detailed tables with values for ISO tolerance grades IT01 to IT18, applicable to nominal sizes up to 3150 mm, including tolerance values expressed in micrometers (µm) and millimeters (mm).

  • Limit Deviations for Holes and Shafts: Clear definitions of upper and lower limit deviations for holes (internal features) and shafts (external features), replacing previous terminology of “upper/lower deviations” with “upper/lower limit deviations” for enhanced precision.

  • Nominal Size Reference: The amendment updates terminology, substituting “basic size” with the preferred term “nominal size” throughout the document for greater clarity and conformity with ISO 286-1.

  • Application Scope: While the standards focus on cylindrical sections (common in holes and shafts), the tolerance and deviation principles can be applied to non-cylindrical workpieces, such as slots or keys, emphasizing versatility.

  • Tables and Figures: The amendment revises and corrects numerous tables and figures illustrating tolerance intervals and limit deviations, including updated numerical values and removal of obsolete footnotes to streamline use.

  • Normative References: Inclusion of related ISO standards such as ISO 1101 (geometrical tolerancing), ISO 1302 (surface texture indication), and ISO 2768 (general tolerances), to ensure comprehensive adherence to dimensional specifications.

Applications

This amendment and the underlying system provide critical guidance for design engineers, quality control specialists, and manufacturing professionals to:

  • Ensure interchangeability and compatibility of mechanical components by defining permissible limits for size and fit between mating parts like holes and shafts.

  • Facilitate consistent quality assurance in mass production by providing universally accepted tolerance grades and limits.

  • Support precision machining and assembly processes by using standardized tolerance tables that reduce ambiguity and errors in dimensional specifications.

  • Apply to multiple manufacturing sectors, including automotive, aerospace, mechanical engineering, and tooling industries where precision fits are essential for performance and safety.

  • Adapt to various workpiece geometries, beyond circular sections, by applying tolerance concepts to slots, thicknesses, and other dimensional features.

Related Standards

To effectively implement the EN 20286-2:1993/prA1 amendment, users should refer to complementary and supporting standards in the Geometrical Product Specifications (GPS) family:

  • ISO 286-1: Basis of tolerances, deviations, and fits - serves as the foundational document related to limits and fits.

  • ISO 1101:2004: Geometrical tolerancing - specifies tolerances for form, orientation, location, and run-out.

  • ISO 1302:2001: Surface texture indication - details methods for indicating surface finishes on technical drawings.

  • ISO 2692:2006: Geometrical tolerancing - addresses maximum material requirement (MMR), least material requirement (LMR), and reciprocity requirements (RPR).

  • ISO 2768-1:1989: General tolerances - provides default tolerance values for linear and angular dimensions when no specific tolerance is indicated.

By adhering to these international standards, organizations can ensure global interoperability, reduce manufacturing errors, and optimize dimensional accuracy in product development and production cycles.

ISO 286-2:1988/DAM 1
Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
