Overview
EN 50342-4:2020 (CLC) - "Lead‑acid starter batteries - Part 4: Dimensions of batteries for heavy vehicles" specifies European requirements for the main physical dimensions, terminal design and related features of lead‑acid starter batteries intended for heavy vehicles. The standard replaces earlier editions and promotes a set of Preferred Types (A, B, C, D2) for new and future battery developments to improve interchangeability and secure mounting in commercial vehicles.
Key Topics
- Preferred Types and other types: Introduces preferred battery series A, B and C (closely related to previous D4, D5, D6) and retains a set of “Other Types” that exist under national standards. New developments should use the preferred types.
- Main dimensions and tolerances: Defines length, width, height and specific dimensional tolerances for preferred and other types; all dimensions are given in millimetres and refer to new batteries at room temperature (polypropylene‑polyethylene copolymer).
- Terminals and marking: Specifies tapered positive/negative terminal profiles, polarity marking (IEC 60417 symbols 5005a/5006a) and embossing/indenting details for terminal symbols.
- Safety labelling and recycling: Requires the six coloured safety symbols per EN 50342‑1 and recycling/collection markings per EN 61429 and ISO/EN plastic identification (e.g., PP/PE).
- Fastening and clamping: Defines fastening methods (upper‑part clamping for preferred types), permitted clamping areas, recommended clamping pressures and guidance to avoid excessive deformation.
- Handling and ergonomics: Requires handles for batteries >20 kg and specifies handle strength testing (per EN 50342‑5).
- Ventilation and degassing: Location and design guidance for central degassing outlets; reference to EN 50342‑2 for outlet dimensions.
- Mechanical constraints: Limits for side‑wall bulging (max. 5 mm) and recommendations for reinforcing housings where needed (e.g., VRLA).
Applications
- Battery and component manufacturers designing starter batteries for trucks, buses and other heavy vehicles.
- Vehicle OEMs and tier‑1 integrators ensuring battery fit, secure mounting and terminal compatibility across fleets.
- Test laboratories and conformity assessors verifying dimensional compliance, terminal marking and mechanical properties.
- Fleet operators and maintenance teams seeking interchangeable, safely‑mounted battery options for heavy vehicle servicing.

The EN 50342-4:2020 standard is specifically designed to address the dimensions of lead-acid starter batteries utilized in heavy vehicles. This standard is essential for both manufacturers and users as it outlines the European requirements for the main dimensions of these batteries, ensuring compatibility and reliability in heavy vehicle applications. One of the key strengths of this standard is its clear definition of the “Preferred Types” series, which includes types A, B, and C. These types are newly introduced and represent an evolution from the previously recognized types D4, D5, and D6, with a focus on tightening tolerances and refining dimensions. This advancement is particularly relevant to manufacturers looking to comply with modern standards while providing high-quality products that meet industry expectations. The scope of EN 50342-4:2020 extends beyond merely stating dimensions; it also facilitates future developments and encourages the adoption of more standardized products. By promoting the use of “Preferred Types” over “Other Types,” the standard aims to unify the market under a set of specifications that enhance interoperability and reduce the risks of incompatibility across heavy vehicles. Furthermore, the transition from the former standard EN 60095 4 to this updated document is evidence of the ongoing enhancements in battery design and technology, addressing evolving industry needs and ensuring that the standard remains relevant in the face of advancements in battery applications. In summary, the EN 50342-4:2020 standard stands out for its comprehensive approach to defining the dimensions of lead-acid starter batteries for heavy vehicles, fostering innovation while ensuring adherence to essential quality and compatibility requirements in the automotive sector.
