Overview
EN 60598-2-25:1994/A1:2004 is a CENELEC-adopted amendment to the European luminaires standard that defines particular requirements for luminaires intended for clinical areas of hospitals and health‑care buildings. It updates EN 60598-2-25 (IEC 60598-2-25:1994) and clarifies the relationship between general luminaire safety rules and medical‑equipment-specific standards. The amendment was approved by CENELEC on 2004‑11‑01 and was published for national implementation in 2005.
Key topics and requirements
This amendment focuses on scope, normative references and a number of editorial and technical clarifications rather than introducing entirely new performance limits. Main points include:
Scope clarification
- Confirms the standard applies to luminaires for clinical areas but excludes medical electrical equipment that contain light sources as defined by IEC 60601‑1 and IEC 60601‑2‑41.
- Adds a note that medical electrical equipment used for medical examination/surgical lighting is covered by IEC 60601‑1 and IEC 60601‑2‑41.
Normative references
- Adds IEC 60601‑2‑41 (particular requirements for surgical luminaires and luminaires for diagnosis) as a normative reference, linking luminaire requirements with medical electrical equipment safety standards.
Technical and editorial amendments
- Revisions to clause references in construction, endurance and thermal test sections (e.g., updates to references in 25.6, 25.12.3 and 25.12.5).
- Adjustment to protection against electric shock references (25.11.1 and 25.11.2).
- Deletion of specific subclause(s) and Annex A from the base text where appropriate.
- Removal of a sentence referencing specific requirements for operating‑theatre table luminaires (now handled by IEC 60601‑2‑41).
Applications and who uses this standard
EN 60598-2-25/A1 is directly relevant for:
- Luminaire manufacturers designing and certifying lighting products for hospitals, clinics and other health‑care buildings.
- Regulatory and compliance engineers verifying that clinical area luminaires meet European electrotechnical safety requirements.
- Lighting designers and specifiers selecting appropriate luminaires for patient rooms, treatment areas and general clinical zones (not including surgical or diagnostic luminaires governed by IEC 60601‑2‑41).
- Test laboratories and certification bodies assessing conformity to EN/IEC luminaire requirements.
Using this standard helps ensure safety, electrical protection and appropriate test procedures for clinical‑area luminaires and clarifies when medical‑equipment standards must be applied instead.
Related standards
- IEC 60601‑2‑41 - Particular requirements for the safety of surgical luminaires and luminaires for diagnosis (normative reference added by this amendment).
- EN/IEC 60598 general series - for broader luminaires requirements and testing (see national adoption for exact cross‑references).
