Overview
EN 61995-1:2008/A1:2017, titled Devices for the connection of luminaires for household and similar purposes – Part 1: General requirements, is a European Standard published by CENELEC (European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization). This document serves as an amendment to EN 61995-1:2008 and aligns with IEC 61995-1:2005/A1:2016. The standard outlines general requirements for connecting devices for luminaires, particularly designed for domestic and similar use. It defines technical provisions to ensure safety, compatibility, and reliability of devices used for fixed luminaires’ electrical connections, focusing on household and comparable environments.
Key Topics
Scope:
- Applies to devices for the connection of luminaires (DCLs) for household and similar purposes.
- Covers the electrical connection of fixed luminaires of class I or class II to circuits rated up to 16 A.
- DCLs intended to be used based on their IP rating (as per IEC 60529).
Marking and Documentation:
- Devices must be clearly marked to identify ratings and safety information, either directly on the equipment, packaging, or in accompanying instruction sheets.
- Ensures traceability and proper use by installers and end users.
Mechanical and Electrical Requirements:
- Outlets must include earthing contacts, with a rated current of 6 A.
- Plugs are also rated for 6 A.
- Specifies compatibility with various types of copper conductors, including solid, stranded, and flexible options.
- Emphasizes safe construction to prevent accidental disconnection during normal use.
Testing and Compliance:
- Describes test procedures to verify safety, electrical integrity, and ease of use.
- Sets force limits for plug insertion and withdrawal (not exceeding 50 N; retention at 2 N).
- Outlines additional tests for insulation and earthing contacts to ensure reliable operation.
Temporary Connections:
- Introduces the concept of a DCL temporary lampholder, which allows a provisional connection to a DCL outlet, appropriately secured and compliant with relevant standards.
Applications
This standard is crucial for manufacturers, designers, and installers of connecting devices used in residential, commercial, and analogous settings, including:
- Residential electrical installations: Ensuring the safety and compatibility of connectors for ceiling, wall, and other fixed luminaires.
- Renovation projects: Providing secure and standardized solutions for connecting or upgrading lighting in household environments.
- Retail and commercial environments: Applying standard-compliant devices in offices, shops, and hospitality facilities.
- Electrical product design: Guiding the development and conformity of plugs, outlets, and temporary lampholders in accordance with European safety requirements.
Adopting EN 61995-1:2008/A1:2017 ensures that connected lighting devices comply with stringent safety and performance standards, reducing risk of electrical faults and ensuring uniformity across the European market.
Related Standards
For broader compliance and advanced design in electrical and lighting systems, consider these related standards:
- IEC 60529 – Degrees of protection provided by enclosures (IP Code)
- EN 60669 series – Switches for household and similar fixed electrical installations
- EN 60998 series – Connecting devices for low voltage circuits
- EN 60238 – Edison screw lampholders
By aligning with EN 61995-1:2008/A1:2017 and related European standards, manufacturers and installers can assure product safety, compatibility, and regulatory acceptance in the European Union and beyond.
