Foreword
IS0 (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide
federation of national standards bodies (IS0 member bodies). The work of
preparing International Standards is normally carried out through IS0
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for
which a technical committee has been established has the right to be rep-
resented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. IS0
collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission
(IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are
circulated to the member bodies for approval before their acceptance as
International Standards by the IS0 Council. They are approved in
accordance with IS0 procedures requiring at least 75 % approval by the
member bodies voting.
International Standard IS0 4217 was prepared by Technical Committee
ISOfTC 68, Banking and related financial services.
This fifth edition cancels and replaces the fourth edition (IS0 4217:1990),
of which it constitutes a minor revision.
Annex A forms an integral part of this International Standard.

Introduction
With the rapid expansion of information interchange on an international
basis, the need for a universally applicable code for the identification of
currencies and funds has become increasingly urgent.
No other worldwide multi-industry standard currency code exists at the
time of publication of this International Standard. It is anticipated that
industries without an existing currency code will wish to give it early
implementation whilst those with an existing currency code may find
advantages to themselves in adopting this International Standard as a
replacement for their own industry standard.
Due consideration has been given to the problems of registration and
publication of the individual codes and their implementation. This Inter-
national Standard includes basic guidelines for these functions.
