Timber structures - Dowel-type fasteners - Requirements
This European Standard specifies the requirements and test methods for materials, geometry, strength, stiffness and durability aspects ( i.e corrosion protection ) of dowel-type fasteners for use in load bearing timber structures. Only dowel-type fasteners manufactured from steel are covered by this European Standard. The aim of this amendment is to correct references for the declared raw materials and to cover resin coated dowel-type fasteners.

This draft amendment is submitted to CEN members for unique acceptance procedure. It has been drawn up by the Technical Committee
CEN/TC 124.
This draft amendment A1, if approved, will modify the European Standard EN 14592:2008. If this draft becomes an amendment, CEN
members are bound to comply with the CEN/CENELEC Internal Regulations which stipulate the conditions for inclusion of this amendment
into the relevant national standard without any alteration.
This draft amendment was established by CEN in three official versions (English, French, German). A version in any other language made
by translation under the responsibility of a CEN member into its own language and notified to the CEN-CENELEC Management Centre has
the same status as the official versions.

This document (EN 14592:2008/FprA1:2011) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 124
“Timber structures”, the secretariat of which is held by AFNOR.
This document is currently submitted to the Unique Acceptance Procedure.
This document has been prepared under a mandate given to CEN by the European Commission and the
European Free Trade Association, and supports essential requirements of EU Directive(s).
For relationship with EU Directive(s), see informative Annex ZA, which is an integral part of this document.

Introduction
This amendment allows further types of stainless steel and carbon steel to be used for fasteners and permits
for some types of coating of the fasteners. This ensures that products marketed before the first version of this
standard was issued can fulfill the requirements. Furthermore, lacks of consistence with EN 1995-1-1 have
been corrected.

1 Modification to the Scope
Replace:
"This European Standard does not cover resin coated dowel-type fasteners and fasteners treated with fire
retardants to improve their fire performance. It also does not cover resin coated fasteners."
with:
"This European Standard does not cover fasteners treated with fire retardants to improve their fire
performance.
This European Standard covers fasteners that may be coated for the following purposes:
1 Corrosion protection (e.g. hot dip galvanization, epoxy coating);
2 Lubricants (to facilitate insertion);
3 Withdrawal enhancement and/or collation (adhesive coating).".

Replace:

In 3.2, threaded nail, add to the text line:

4 Modification to 5.3, Nominal diameter
Second indent, replace "maximum" with "minimum".
5 Modifications to 6.1, Nails
Replace the content of 6.1.1 with "Void".
In 6.1.2, Materials, replace:
"EN 10083-1 or EN 10088-2.".
with:
"EN 10088. The relevant specification shall be declared.
Other steel grades may be used, provided it has been documented that the steel has at least equivalent
mechanical properties to any of the grades listed in the above standards. All relevant information of the
alternative steel grades shall be obtained from testing and declared as a part of the ITT.".
In 6.1.3, Geometry, third paragraph, replace:

Replace all the present text with:
“For nails, where corrosion protection is required, the grade of the parent material or thickness of coating shall
be declared.
NOTE Examples of corrosion protection or material specifications for different service classes are given in
EN 1995-1-1 and Annex A.”.
8 Modification to 6.2.2, Materials
Replace:
