Overview
kSIST FprEN 6129:2026 is a European Draft Standard developed by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST), focusing on blind bolt fasteners used in aerospace applications. It specifies the configuration, dimensions, tolerances, and mass of high-strength, pulltype, stainless steel blind bolts featuring a protruding head. These fasteners are essential for situations where only one side of a structure is accessible for installation, a common scenario in aerospace engineering.
This standard is intended to align with the latest European requirements, serving the aerospace industry with up-to-date technical specifications for reliable, high-strength blind bolts. It supersedes the earlier EN 6129:2016, introducing several updates in figures, tables, and preferred options for materials and finishes.
Key Topics
- Product Scope: Stainless steel, high-strength blind bolts with protruding head, pulltype design.
- Configuration and Geometry: Detailed dimensions, tolerances, static strength, preload, and retention characteristics.
- Grip Range and Mass: Comprehensive tables specifying grip lengths and the associated masses for various bolt diameters.
- Material Requirements:
- A-286 corrosion-resistant steel (CRES)
- 316 CRES
- Nickel alloy options per relevant aerospace material specifications
- Surface Finishes and Lubrication:
- Passivation per SAE AMS2700
- Aluminium pigmented coatings (EN 4473)
- Solid film lubricants for corrosion resistance
- Designation and Marking: Specific marking requirements to ensure traceability and standardization, aligned with EN 2424.
- Technical Specification: Adopts NASM8975 as the general fastener specification, with certain requirements unique to this standard.
Applications
Blind bolts as specified in kSIST FprEN 6129:2026 are critical in the following areas:
- Aircraft and Aerospace Structures: Used extensively in assembling airframes, control surfaces, interior panels, and other components where structural integrity is paramount and access may be limited to only one side.
- Maintenance and Upgrades: Suitable for repairs in restricted-access zones of aircraft and satellites, allowing secure fastening without disassembly of surrounding parts.
- Spacecraft Assembly: Utilized in environments demanding both strength and precision, ensuring reliable joints under vibration and load.
- General Engineering: Applicable where the aerospace-grade, high-strength, corrosion-resistant fastener is required, such as high-speed rail, defense, and marine industries.
The combination of protruding head design and pulltype installation enables ease of use in confined spaces while maintaining consistent performance in demanding operational conditions.
Related Standards
The following standards complement and are referenced within kSIST FprEN 6129:2026:
- EN 2424: Marking of aerospace products
- EN 4473: Aluminium pigmented coatings for fasteners - Technical specification
- SAE AMS2700: Passivation of corrosion-resistant steels
