Overview

SIST EN 61995-1:2008/A1:2017 is a European Standard developed by CLC that specifies the general requirements for devices used to connect luminaires in household and similar applications. This standard covers the design, safety, and performance criteria for connection devices intended for fixed luminaires of Class I or Class II with rated currents up to 16 A. It ensures reliable and safe electrical connections between luminaires and final circuits, emphasizing ease of installation and compliance with IP ratings as per IEC 60529.

This amendment (A1) updates the original 2008 publication by incorporating modifications approved in 2016, aligning with the IEC 61995-1:2005/A1:2016 international standard, and reflecting industry best practices for plugs, socket-outlets, and switches in lighting applications.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Application
Devices compliant with EN 61995-1 are intended for household or similar environments. They connect fixed luminaires safely without providing mechanical support for the fixture and are rated primarily for currents up to 6 A on plugs and outlets.

  • Device Types Covered
The standard covers connection devices such as DCL (Dedicated Connection Luminaire) outlets and plugs, including temporary lampholders designed for provisional lighting connections.

  • Electrical and Mechanical Requirements
Specifications include rated currents, earthing contacts, conductor connection capabilities with solid and flexible wires, and compliance with insulation and creepage distance standards to ensure user safety.

  • Markings and Documentation
Clear marking requirements are stipulated for both plugs and outlets, including labeling on devices, packaging, or accompanying instructions to ensure correct identification and safe use.

  • Testing Procedures
The standard details tests for electrical continuity, insulation, mechanical strength, and the force required to insert and withdraw plugs. The insertion/withdrawal force must not exceed 50 N, ensuring ease of use while preventing accidental unplugging.

Applications

SIST EN 61995-1:2008/A1:2017 is essential for manufacturers, electrical designers, and installers involved in:

  • Lighting Installation in Homes and Residential Buildings
Ensuring safe, standardized connections between fixed household luminaires and electrical circuits.

  • Commercial and Similar Premises
Adaptable for use in small offices, shops, and other environments with similar needs for fixed lighting connectivity.

  • Manufacture of Electrical Accessories
Guiding the development and quality control of plugs, socket outlets, and temporary lampholders that connect lighting fixtures safely.

  • Regulatory Compliance and Safety Assurance
Supporting compliance with European electrotechnical safety mandates, reducing the risk of electrical faults or hazards in lighting installations.

Related Standards

  • IEC 61995-1:2005/A1:2016
The international counterpart of this European standard, providing the foundational technical framework.

  • IEC 60529
Defines IP (Ingress Protection) ratings relevant for luminaire connection devices to ensure protection against dust and water ingress.

  • EN 60309
Covering industrial plugs and socket-outlets, which may be relevant for more heavy-duty lighting connections but differ from household DCL devices.

  • EN 61210
Related to connecting devices in electrical installations, complementing luminaire connection standards for broader electrical accessory safety.
