Codes for the representation of names of countries and their subdivisions -- Part 2: Country subdivision code
ISO 3166-2:2013 establishes a universally applicable code for the representation of the names of principal administrative divisions of countries and territories included in ISO 3166-1. It is intended to be used in conjunction with ISO 3166-1.
Clauses 4 to 7 of ISO 3166-2:2013 provide the structure for a code for the representation of names of principal administrative divisions, or similar areas, of the countries and geopolitical entities included in ISO 3166-1.
Clause 8 contains a list of names of subdivisions of countries and geopolitical entities, together with the code element developed for each one of them.

L'ISO 3166-2:2013 fournit un code d'application universelle pour la représentation des noms des principales divisions administratives des pays et territoires figurant dans l'ISO 3166-1. Elle est censée être utilisée conjointement à l'ISO 3166-1.
Les Articles 4 à 7 de l'ISO 3166-2:2013 fournissent la structure d'un code pour la représentation des noms des principales divisions administratives ou territoires semblables des pays et entités géopolitiques inclus dans l'ISO 3166-1.
L'Article 8 comporte une liste des noms de subdivisions de pays et d'entités géopolitiques associés au codet attribué pour chacun d'eux.

ISO 3166 consists of the following parts, under the general title Codes for the representation of names of
countries and their subdivisions:
— Part 1: Country codes
— Part 2: Country subdivision code
— Part 3: Code for formerly used names of countries
ISO 3166 was first published in 1974. It was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 46, Information and
documentation, in collaboration with the following International Organizations: Customs Cooperation Council
(CCC), [since 1995: World Customs Organization (WCO)], United Nations Economic Commission for Europe
(ECE), Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), International Atomic Energy Agency
(IAEA), International Air Transport Association (IATA), International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), International
Chamber of Shipping (ICS), International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA), International Labour Office
(ILO), International Telecommunication Union (ITU), International Union of Railways (UIC), United Nations
Organization (UN), United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), Universal Postal Union
(UPU), World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), and World Health Organization (WHO).
The International Standard was previously published in 1974, 1981, 1988 and 1993 as ISO 3166. In 1997, it was
split into three parts. The first edition of the Part 2 was ISO 3166-2:1998.
The second edition of Part 2, ISO 3166-2:2007, was a consolidation of all changes to the lists of

ISO 3166-2:1998 agreed to by the ISO 3166/MA , published in the ISO 3166-2 Newsletters up to I-9.
The present, third edition of the Part 2, ISO 3166-2:2013, cancels and replaces ISO 3166-2:2007 of which it is
a minor revision. It comprises a consolidation of all changes agreed by the ISO 3166/MA and published in the
ISO 3166-2 Newsletter II-1 to II-3. This minor revision incorporates the following changes:
in 6.1, the generic function (update, publish) has replaced mention of the tool (newsletter) for updates
to code elements;
in 7.2, it is clearly stated that the set of code elements in 7.1.4 is not administered, nor maintained by
the ISO 3166/MA.
This third edition is simultaneously published with the third edition of Part 1, ISO 3166-1:2013, and the
second edition of Part 3, ISO 3166-3:2013.
