Overview

SIST EN 61121:2013/A11:2019 is a European standard developed by the CLC/TC 59X committee, focusing on household electric tumble dryers. This amendment updates the 2013 edition of EN 61121 and introduces significant technical changes related to methods for measuring the performance of tumble dryers used in domestic environments. The standard specifically applies to electric tumble dryers-both automatic and non-automatic-that incorporate an electrical heating device. It excludes dryers using gas or other fuels.

The objective of SIST EN 61121:2013/A11:2019 is to define the principal performance characteristics that are relevant to users and to describe standardized measurement methods. By harmonizing these testing methods, the standard supports reliable evaluations of tumble dryer energy consumption, condensation efficiency, noise emission, and drying performance.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Applicability
Covers household electric tumble dryers with or without cold water supply. Gas or non-electric heating sources are excluded.

  • Performance Characteristics
Defines key metrics such as energy consumption, programme duration, condensation efficiency, and sound power level.

  • Testing Procedures
Outlines standardized test sequences for performance measurements to ensure comparability and reliability.

  • Verification and Tolerances
Details a two-step control process involving single and multiple appliance testing with specified tolerances, supporting manufacturers and regulatory compliance.

  • Energy Labelling and Ecodesign Compliance
Harmonizes with EU Delegated Regulation (EU) No 392/2012 for energy labelling and Commission Regulation (EU) No 932/2012 for ecodesign requirements. Compliance with this standard grants a presumption of conformity within its scope.

  • Noise Measurement Updates
Modifies normative references to align noise measurement with EN 60704-2-6.

  • Amendments and Annexes
Includes updated normative references, control procedures annexes, and informative annexes explaining relationships to EU directives.

Applications

SIST EN 61121:2013/A11:2019 serves as the foundation for:

  • Manufacturers
Facilitates consistent design validation and reporting for household tumble dryers to meet regulatory and market requirements.

  • Testing Laboratories
Provides standardized methods to accurately measure performance parameters, ensuring reliable product benchmarking.

  • Regulators and Certification Bodies
Assists in verifying manufacturer claims and enforcing compliance with energy labelling and ecodesign legislation within the European Union and EFTA states.

  • Consumers and Retailers
Enables better understanding of product efficiency, energy consumption, noise emissions, and environmental impact, empowering informed purchasing decisions.

  • Standardization and Compliance Experts
Supports alignment of product testing with harmonized European standards, facilitating global trade and market access.

Tolerances and control procedures
The verification tolerances are given in the relevant Annex of the COMMISSION DELEGATED REGULATION
(EU) No 392/2012 of 1 March 2012 supplementing Directive 2010/30/EU of the European Parliament and of the
Council with regard to energy labelling of household tumble dryers and of the COMMISSION REGULATION
(EU) No 932/2012 of 3 October 2012 implementing Directive 2009/125/EC of the European Parliament and of
the Council with regard to ecodesign requirements for household tumble dryers.
The verification of values declared by the manufacturer consists of two steps.
Step 1 requires one test series for one test tumble dryer. All values according to this European Standard are
measured and reported. The relevant tolerances for step 1 shall be applied.
Step 2 requires one test series for each of three additional test tumble dryers. All values are measured and
reported for each of the three test tumble dryers according to this European Standard. The average values of
the three test tumble dryers are calculated as the arithmetic mean of the values reported for each of the three
test tumble dryers. The relevant tolerances for step 2 shall be applied.
A schematic representation of the procedure is set out in Figure ZB.1.
*No rounding applies if not required by regulation.
