oSIST prEN IEC 60598-2-5:2026 is the SIST adoption of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) floodlight standard for luminaires. It specifies particular requirements for floodlights used with electric light sources on supply voltages not exceeding 1 000 V, and it is meant for manufacturers, test laboratories, certifiers and specifiers who need to design, test or assess these products.
What does oSIST prEN IEC 60598-2-5:2026 specify?
oSIST prEN IEC 60598-2-5:2026 gives the particular requirements for floodlights and is used together with IEC 60598-1. It sets the extra rules that apply to floodlights beyond the general luminaire requirements, so readers can check the right construction, marking, mounting and test provisions for this product type.
The document is arranged as clauses 1 to 17, covering scope, references, terms, general requirements, classification, marking, construction, wiring, earthing, protection against electric shock, ingress resistance, insulation and electric strength, creepage distances, endurance and thermal tests, resistance to heat/fire/tracking, and terminal requirements. Annex AAA is an informative schedule of amended clauses that may require retesting when moving from the previous edition.
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| AAA | Informative schedule of amended clauses with more serious or critical requirements that may trigger retesting |
What are the key requirements of oSIST prEN IEC 60598-2-5:2026?
oSIST prEN IEC 60598-2-5:2026 mainly adds floodlight-specific requirements to the general luminaire rules in Part 1. In practice, the document focuses on installation information, outdoor durability, mounting strength, glass cover safety and thermal behaviour.
Relationship with IEC 60598-1
The standard is intended to be used with the latest edition of IEC 60598-1 and its amendments. Where this document says addition, modification or replacement, the corresponding Part 1 text is adapted. For users, that means the floodlight rules cannot be read in isolation.
Instructions, marking and classification
Installation instructions must state the operating position when it is not universal, the mass and overall dimensions, the largest projected area subject to wind force, indoor suitability where relevant, and the maximum mounting height above ground level. This matters because installers and buyers need the data to select supports, mounting height and location correctly.
Construction and mounting
Outdoor floodlights need moisture protection at least equivalent to IPX3. The means of attachment must match the mass of the luminaire and withstand wind loads at the declared mounting height, and the design must prevent parts from becoming dislodged by vibration or if a fixing fails. Practically, this is the part of the standard that governs brackets, fixings and support strength.
Glass covers
For luminaires intended for higher mounting heights, glass covers must either break into small pieces, have high impact resistance, or retain fragments if they break. The document gives separate test routes for these options, including a fragmentation count method and an impact test route using the IK code. In practice, the manufacturer must choose the protection concept and then prove it by the relevant test.
Thermal and endurance testing
For outdoor-use luminaires, the test temperatures used from Part 1 are adjusted to allow for natural air movement in service. For indoor-use luminaires, that adjustment is not applied, and the installation instructions must state indoor suitability. Glass covers also have to remain within declared thermal limits, including their temperature range and maximum temperature difference.
Retesting after revision
For luminaires already assessed to the previous edition, full type testing is not required. The product and previous test results are reviewed against the amended clauses listed in Annex AAA. This helps users focus re-evaluation on the changed high-risk requirements.
What terms does oSIST prEN IEC 60598-2-5:2026 define?
- Floodlight - a luminaire for lighting a scene or object so its illuminance is greatly increased relative to the surroundings.
- Luminaire - in this part, the term luminaire means floodlight(s).
- Part 1 - IEC 60598-1, the general requirements and tests used together with this part.
- IP classification - the protection rating used to describe resistance to ingress of solid objects and moisture.
- IK code - the impact protection code used for the high-impact glass test route.
- Operating position - the mounting position that must be stated when the floodlight is not suitable for all positions.
Who uses oSIST prEN IEC 60598-2-5:2026?
Lighting manufacturers use oSIST prEN IEC 60598-2-5:2026 to design floodlights, choose glass cover protection, define mounting hardware and prepare installation instructions. Test laboratories and certification bodies use it for type testing, impact testing, ingress testing and thermal assessment.
Buyers, specifiers and project engineers use it to check whether a floodlight is suitable for the intended mounting height, outdoor exposure and installation method. Installers and maintenance teams use it to understand support, fixing and instruction requirements before the product is put into service.
What changed in oSIST prEN IEC 60598-2-5:2026 from the previous edition?
oSIST prEN IEC 60598-2-5:2026 cancels and replaces the third edition published in 2015. The standard states these main changes:
- clause numbers and structure aligned with IEC 60598-1
- more detailed glass breakage tests added
- wind force test reviewed and aligned with IEC 60598-2-3
- mounting height information requirement modified
- high impact glass requirements modified, with subclause 7.107.3 listed in Annex AAA as more onerous
Which standards are used with oSIST prEN IEC 60598-2-5:2026?
- IEC 60598-1:2024 - provides the general requirements and tests that Part 2-5 builds on.
- IEC 60068-2-75 - gives the hammer test method used for impact testing.
- IEC 62262:2002 and IEC 62262:2002/AMD1:2021 - provide the IK code used for impact classification.
- IEC/TR 62696 - supports the application of the IK code in the glass impact test.
What does the oSIST prEN IEC 60598-2-5:2026 document contain?
The document contains the floodlight-specific clauses, plus the linked Part 1 clauses that remain applicable. It includes test and inspection methods for mounting strength, glass fragmentation, impact resistance and thermal behaviour.
It also includes Figure 1 for the static wind-force test and Figures 2 and 3 for counting glass fragments after breakage. These figures support the practical test setup and the pass/fail check.
Annex AAA provides a clause-by-clause schedule of changed requirements that may need retesting when updating certification or rechecking an existing design.
